Campbell falls to No. 21 Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – No. 21 Coastal Carolina took care of business on their home field, defeating Campbell 15-1 in seven innings Tuesday night at Springs Brooks Stadium.

The Chanticleers improved to 21-8, and the Fighting Camels now sit at 13-15.

Peyton Brown started on the mound for Campbell for a scheduled one inning of work. He hit one Coastal batter but retired the other three he faced.

Coastal starter Luke Jones also hit a batter and retired the other three in his first frame of work. He went on to pitch 5.1 innings with three strikeouts, three hits and one run in the winning effort, moving his record to 1-1.

First out of the bullpen for the Camels was Jackson Roberts (2-3), and the Chanticleers opened the scoring with two runs in the second. Ty Dooley was hit by a pitch and Domenico Tozzi singled to put two runners on base.

The two runners advanced one base on an groundout from Colby Thorndyke. Wells Sykes brought the two runs to score with an RBI single to left field, but he was thrown out at second trying to advance when the throw home was cut off.

Coastal added another three runs in the bottom of the third inning off Roberts. Blake Barthol led off the inning with a double off the wall in left center, then he came home to score on an RBI single off the bat of Sebastian Alexander.

Dean Mihos followed with a single of his own, and the two came around to score on a single to left center from Dooley.

Drew Siegner replaced Roberts to start the home half of the fourth. CCU scored three unearned runs to extend their lead to 8-0. After an error from the Campbell infield extended the inning, Alexander sent the first pitch of his at-bat into the Coastal bullpen in left for a three-run homer.

Jett Music recorded Campbell's first hit of the game with a single up the middle with one out in the fifth. He would be the only baserunner that inning, as Jones continued his strong performance on the mound. Through the first five frames, he had three strikeouts, no walks, one hit and one hit-by-pitch.

Dooley added another run for the home team with a solo shot to right in the fifth to make it 9-0 going to the sixth.

The Camels finally broke through in the sixth inning thanks to a solo home run from Darnell Parker Jr. that he sent 406 feet to left center. Dalen Thompson followed that up with an infield single, forcing the Chanticleers to the bullpen.

Matthew Potok replaced Jones on the mound, and he got out of the inning with no more damage done.

Siegner was done on the mound after two innings, and he made way for Ethan Snyder to open the bottom of the sixth. Sykes singled and Barthol walked before Alexander hit his second three-run home run of the night, this one to right center to put the Chants up, 12-1.

Mihos was the benefactor of an error to get on base, then he advanced to third on another error on his steal attempt before Snyder struck out pinch-hitter Freddy Rodriguez to put two outs on the board.

Snyder was then replaced by Nick Biasi. He issued a walk, an RBI single and a HBP before making way for Zac Martin.

The Chants scored three more unearned runs in the frame on RBI singles from Tozzi and Chad Born, and a bases-loaded balk by Martin.

Darin Horn pitched the final inning for CCU, walking and hitting a batter before retiring the side.
