MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - Campbell's sixth-inning rally came up short as the Camels fell to College of Charleston, 5-4, in the first game of the weekend series.
The Camels are now 33-14 (18-4 CAA) for the year, and the Cougars are now 25-23 (15-7 CAA).
The Cougars got the first three runs of the game in the fourth inning after Karly Smith hit an RBI and then scored after Karlee Hughes reached base on a fielder's choice. Julie Sitterding hit a double down the right field line and eventually stole home. The Cougars scored two runs in the fifth inning, one being from an error.
The Camels answered in the sixth inning when Cadan Brinkman reached base on a fielder's choice, scoring Hannah Cornetto, who hit a double down to left field. Janel Day then entered the lineup as a pinch hitter and hit a three RBI home run to bridge the gap to just 4-5.
Mackenzie Mathis (9-11) picked up the win after pitching 6.0 innings and allowing six hits, four earned runs, one walk and seven strikeouts.
Hannah Leierer (8-4) was credited with the loss after pitching 5.0 innings, allowing four hits, four earned runs, two walks and one strikeout.
