BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell dropped the series finale against Towson by a 3-2 score Sunday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.
Â
The Tigers (14-30, 6-12 CAA) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning, as Nich Francuzenko drew a bases-loaded walk on a 3-2 count to bring ahead what proved to be the winning run.
Â
The Camels (18-24, 9-9) had a two-out single in the bottom of the frame from
Jett Music, but they couldn't continue the rally.
Â
Nate Nabholz (4-0) earned the win for Towson. He pitched 4.0 innings out of the bullpen, allowing only two hits to the Camels in the fourth through eighth innings. He also recorded five strikeouts and no walks.
Â
Dutch DeProspero started for Towson, going 2.2 innings with three hits, one run and two strikeouts. His counterpart was
Jake Murray, who went 4.0 innings for Campbell with five strikeouts and three hits. Towson scored two runs on him in the third inning, but they were both unearned runs.
Â
With two outs and runners on first and second in the third frame, Brian Heckelman reached on a fielding error by
Darnell Parker Jr. The runner on second, Ethan Brand, scored on the play. The next batter, Brett Ahalt laced an RBI double into left center field to bring in the subsequent run.
Â
Campbell cut into the lead in the bottom of the same inning with an RBI single by
Joey Morton. In the fourth inning, CU tied the game with a pinch-hit RBI single by
Seth Farni.
Â
Zach Sabers took the mound to start the fifth inning, and he allowed no hits with six strikeouts and three walks over 4.0 innings of work.
Â
In the fifth through eighth innings, the teams combined for just five baserunners. Campbell's two baserunners in that frame were then caught stealing second base and picked off at first base, meaning Nabholz faced the minimum during his stretch of work.
Â
CU went to
Lleyton Grubich (2-2) out of the bullpen for the ninth inning, and he retired the first two batters with a strikeout and flyout. A walk, single and another walk loaded the bases before Francuzenko worked his seven-pitch at-bat for the RBI walk.
Â
Nick Biasi entered the game for Campbell, and he induced a flyout to end the top of the ninth.
