Camels set for CAA Championship

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The No. 3 seed Fighting Camels are set for their first run through the CAA Championship, beginning on Wednesday, May 21 at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, S.C.
 
Campbell is joined in the tournament field by No. 1 Northeastern, No. 2 UNCW, No. 4 Charleston, No. 5 William & Mary, and No. 6 Elon.
 
The Camels (24-29, 15-12 CAA) open their run in the CAA Championship against Elon (24-30, 13-14) on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00. Campbell will start Jake Murray on the mound, and he'll face off against Declan Lavelle. The two pitchers opposed each other on May 10 in the second game of a doubleheader. Campbell won the game, 6-0, behind seven shutout innings from Murray. Lavelle went six innings himself, but he allowed six hits and five runs to the Campbell offense.
 
Charleston and William & Mary will face each other in the first game of the tournament. Northeastern and UNCW await the winners of the two games, while the losers will face off Thursday morning in an elimination game. Every game in of the championships will be streamed live on FloCollege.
 
Tournament History
This is the first appearance for Campbell at the CAA Championship in its second season in the conference. All-time, CU has won seven conference tournaments and has a 39-32 record in conference tournaments.
 
Know Your Opponents
Campbell has series wins over three of the teams in the tournament – UNCW, Charleston and Elon. No. 1 seed Northeastern was last defeated by Campbell in an 18-8 eight-inning decision on April 6.
 
All-Conference Camels
CU had five players named to the All-CAA teams. Joey Morton, first team, Joe Simpson and Dalen Thompson, second team, Jake Murray, honorable mention, and Jett Music, all-rookie team.
 
Top of the Charts
Jake Murray is 12th in the NCAA in strikeouts per nine innings (12.64). He leads the CAA in strikeouts looking, with 30.
 
Andrew Schuldt is 2nd in the CAA with 46 walks.   
 
The Campbell pitching staff averages 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings, the best mark in the CAA and 39th in the country.
 
The team has 119 stolen bases this year, 27th in the NCAA.
 
New Faces in the Creek
Campbell has new faces up and down the roster. Headlined by the coaching staff additions of Coach Marx, Coach Stone, Coach LaRue and Coach Kramer, the Camels welcome 23 newcomers on the roster.
 
Taking One for the Team
The Camels lead the CAA and are 16th in the country in hit-by-pitches, with 112. Darnell Parker Jr. accounts for 25, first in the CAA and 12th in the country. Jackson Thompson is tied for fourth in the conference.
 
Campbell is one of four teams ranked in the top 20 in HBP and top 40 in home runs (Georgia, Davidson, Bethune-Cookman).
 
CAA Preseason Honors
Dalen Thompson and Andy Schuldt were named to the All-CAA Preseason Team as honorable mentions.
 
Century Club
Across the 2022 & 2023 seasons, the Camels recorded 100+ doubles, home runs, stolen bases and HBPs. They were the only team to accomplish this feat in either year. In 2024, Campbell recorded 112 home runs, 103 doubles, 98 stolen bases and 96 HBPs.
 
National Leaderboard
When Campbell's 2024 season ended, they were 8th in home runs, 12th in walks, 17th in slugging percentage, 20th in runs per game, and 23rd in OBP.
 
Replacing The Sheriff
The Camels are looking to replace the production of Lawson Harrill, who led the team in every major hitting category and set a new school record for career home runs (51).
