MT. PLEASANT, S.C. –
Lukas Schramm,
Joey Morton and
Dalen Thompson each had two home runs and the Camels scored 10 runs in the final three innings, but it was not enough to overcome an early deficit as Campbell dropped a 12-11 decision in the third round of the CAA Championship Friday evening at The Ballpark at Patriots Point.
Campbell's season ends with a 25-31 overall record and 1-2 in the conference tournament and a third place regular season finish. Charleston improved their record to 37-21 and extended their run in the postseason.
David Rossow (6-4) started on the mound for the Camels. He allowed six runs on one walk and four strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Hunter Phipps started for Charleston, and he went 4.0 innings as well with two hits, one run, two walks and four strikeouts.
The Cougars opened the scoring with an RBI single by Dylan Johnson in the first inning. A two-run home run by Alex LaCoste in the second frame made the score 3-0.
RBI knocks by Dariyan Pendergrass and Landon Penfield added three runs in the fourth for Charleston. Back-to-back hits from LaCoste and Ben Venables in the fifth frame made it 8-0 in favor of Charleston.
Campbell brought their first run across the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Darnell Parker Jr. led off the frame with a leadoff double, then
Joe Simpson brought him home with an RBI single.
The Camels made a game of it with five runs in the seventh. Schramm led off the inning with his first home run, then Morton followed with a two-run shot that cleared the scoreboard in right center. The ball traveled an estimated 452 feet, the longest home run of the season for the Camels.
A single and two walks loaded the bases for Parker Jr., who was hit by a pitch for an RBI. Schramm followed that with a four-pitch walk for the final run in the frame.
Evans Hendricks,
Jett Music,
Bryce Schares,
Nick Biasi,
Lleyton Grubich and
Mason Smith all saw time out of the bullpen for Campbell.
The Cougars also went to their bullpen frequently. They used five pitchers in relief, with Alex Lyon (10-1) earning the win and Davis Aiken working a 2.1 inning save.
The Cougars quickly answered with four runs in the top of the eighth with a two-RBI single from Tyler Sorrentino and a two-RBI triple by Ben Venables.
Thompson and Morton each had solo home runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 12-6 ball game.
Smith pitched the ninth inning for CU, and after the Cougars loaded the bases, he recorded two straight strikeouts to put up a zero on the scoreboard.
Andrew Schuldt led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk, then Schramm hit his second home run of the day. Thompson followed with a two-out home run to make it a one-run ball game before Charleston recorded the final out of the game.
