Campbell falls to Elon in game one of series

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell's comeback fell short on Friday night, falling to Elon 10-8 at Jim Perry Stadium.

The Camels (20-28, 11-11 CAA) scored five runs on three home runs in the second inning, but the Phoenix (24-25, 13-9) scored six runs in the middle innings for the come-from-behind win.

Elon started the scoring with two runs in the first inning on an RBI single from Charlie Granatell.

Starter Zach Sabers settled down over the next two innings, putting up zeros in the second and third. However, he gave up four runs in the fourth on the way to his first loss of the season (1-1).

Campbell scored five runs in the second on homers by Jonah Oster, Charlie Meglio and Dalen Thompson, all of which came against Elon starter Justin Mitrovich, the reigning CAA Pitcher of the Week.

Mitrovich went on to pitch 6.0 innings and allowed his offense to make the comeback, moving his record to 6-3 this season.

Elon scored four runs in the fourth inning to retake the lead. Tank Yaghoubi hit an RBI single through the left side with two outs, and he was followed by a three-run homer by Ryan Sprock to the opposite field in right.

Mitrovich retired the Camels in order in the fourth and fifth innings, and Jake Hajdu smacked a two-RBI single up the middle in the fifth to extend the lead to 8-5.

Peyton Brown entered the game out of the bullpen in the fifth inning, and he pitched the rest of the way for Campbell.

A two-RBI double from Lukas Schramm in the sixth inning brought the Camels back to within one. Oster led off the frame with a single, and Andrew Schuldt worked a walk. Both runners scored on Schramm's hit.

Hajdu came through once again for the Phoenix with a two-RBI double down the left field line in the seventh, one of his team-leading three hits.

Sam Nomura came in to pitch the seventh and eighth innings for Elon. The Camels scored one run in the seventh off an RBI single from Oster. Oster led the team with three hits, and he was one of four Camels with two RBI.

The Camels were retired in order in the eighth and ninth innings. Jackson Thompson led off the eighth with a single, but he was retired on a double play.

Sprock moved from third base to the mound for the ninth inning, and he earned his fourth save of the season.
