No. 9 URI outlasts Camels 31-20 in opener

KINGSTON, R.I. – No. 9 Rhode Island mounted a second half comeback, scoring 17-straight to close out visiting Campbell 31-20 on Friday night in the CAA and 2025 season opener for both teams at Meade Stadium.

The Rams (1-0, 1-0 CAA) trailed 17-14 at the break before outscoring Campbell (0-1, 0-1 CAA) 17-3 in the second half.

The Rams scored in four plays on their opening drive, with Devin Farrell finding Kevin Schaeffer for a 31-yard strike just 1:53 into the game.

Campbell responded with 17-straight points, sparked by a pair of URI fumbles, including a TD pass from Kamden Sixkiller to JJ Cowan, a Mike Chandler II six-yard keeper and a 29-yard field goal from Alex Crabb.
Antwain Littleton, Jr. stopped the CU run for the Rams, punching in a two-yard run to cap off an eight-play, 75 yard drive, as Campbell took a 17-14 lead into the halftime break.

Crabb extended the Campbell lead after the half with a 40-yard field goal, but following a fumble on the Camels' next possession, URI scored on its next three drives, including a Garth White field goal, another Littleton punch-in score, and a 46-yard strike from Farrell to Marquis Buchanan.

Buchanan finished with a game-high 167 yards receiving on six catches with a TD, while Farrell completed 15-of-28 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns. Littleton, meanwhile, added 85 yards rushing with two touchdowns on 25 carries.

Leisaan Hibbert led the Rams' defense with eight tackles, while Rohan Davy and Case Mankins each posted six tackles and a sack apiece.

Sixkiller completed 17-of-33 passes for 144 yards, a touchdown and 21 yards rushing in his Campbell debut, while Randall King and Spencer Jones combined for 107 yards on nine catches. Chandler, meanwhile, rushed for 29 yards and a score.
Logan Livermon led the Campbell defense with a game-high nine tackles, with Jojo Pace adding six stops, including a tackle for loss, while tacking on a forced fumble.

Next up, Campbell travels to nearly East Carolina for a September 6 (6:00 p.m.) matchup at the FBS-member Pirates. The Camels will host Furman in their home opener on September 13 (3:30 p.m.).
