Camels set to defend title at Caledonia

CU has won Golfweek event seven times since 2012

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell continues its 2025-26 women's golf season Sunday with opening round of the Golfweek Fall Challenge at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawley's Island, S.C.

The 54-hole, 3-day, 20-team event includes defending champ Campbell and UNCW, plus regional rivals Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina and Old Dominion.  Four Big South schools – High Point, Presbyterian, USC Upstate and Winthrop – are also in the event, which begins Sunday at 7:30 a.m.

Under the direction of head coach John Crooks, who enters his 35th year in charge of the program, Campbell has earned NCAA postseason berths in 12 of the last 13 seasons.  Campbell earned an at-large berth to the 2025 NCAA Lubbock Regional.

Last year at Caledonia, the Camels delivered the 100th career women's golf coaching victory for Crooks.  Campbell (285-282-283—850) turned a 3-shot second-round deficit into its seventh team title (2012, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2024) and in addition to a pair of runner-up finishes on the Mike Strantz design since 2012.

Mira Berglund (T3), Alicia Olsson (T6) and Fanni Gronlund (T11, 72-69-71—212, -1) finished among the top 11 individuals in the 2024 event, while Isabella Hahne tied for 33rd (71-75-74—220) and Izabella Grimbrandt finished T52 (76-76-75—227) for the Camels.

Campbell opened the season Aug. 25 with a fifth-place showing at the Clemson Tiger Classic.  After playing the first 18 holes 16-over, the Camels played the afternoon round even par.  Taylah Ellems (T3), Hahne (T10) and Gronlund (T12) all placed among the top 12 individuals.

Four of the five players (Hahne, Gronlund, Ellems and Grimbrandt) in next week's lineup assembled by Crooks and associate head coach Val Patino have experience at Caledonia.  Junior Jade Potter will compete on the par-71 layout for the first time as will freshman Linn Svedlund, who will play as an individual.

Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.

Golfweek Fall Challenge
Caledonia Golf & Fish Club | Pawley's Island, S.C.
Par 71, 6526 Yards | Sept. 7-9, 2025

Live Scoring: Golfstat.com

Format: 54 holes (18-18-18) with 7:30 a.m. double tee times Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

The Field (20 teams):  Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Boise State, Campbell, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Coastal Carolina, Delaware, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, High Point, Lipscomb, Morehead State, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, Old Dominion, Presbyterian, USC Upstate, Troy, Winthrop.

The Course – Caledonia Golf & Fish Club (Par 71, 6526 yards): Caledonia was ranked No.-27 in the 2014 Golf Magazine "Top 100 You Can Play" course listing and is annually ranked on "America's 100 Greatest Public courses" list by Golf Digest.  The 6,526-yard Mike Strantz design has been described as having "18 signature holes," with holes routed around majestic oaks and meandering streams. The picturesque 18th hole borders the Plantation's old rice field, and requires a precise tee shot that sets up a difficult second shot: a forced carry onto a green at the foot of the clubhouse.

"Caledonia is a very intriguing golf course," said Crooks. "It gives you a lot of different looks, makes you hit a lot of different clubs. One hole might be a water hazard, one there might be a tree in the fairway, the next might have a bunker guarding the green you have to be careful with."

The Coach: Now in his 35th year as head coach of the CU women and first as Director of Golf, John Crooks has been named league coach of the year 23 times in his tenure.  His teams have combined to earn 37 NCAA post-season trips, including 16 straight appearances for the men or women.  His teams have won 162 tournaments and with 100 career tournament titles, Crooks trails only Dan Brooks of Duke (143) on the all-time coaching victories list among Division I women's coaches.  He has guided his teams to 27 league titles, including 19 on the women's side and eight in men's competition (from 1990-2025).

Senior Isabella Hahne (Kungsbacka, Sweden) ranks 8th on the school career scoring average list (74.45) with seven top-10 finishes in 31 outings.  She has produced 23 career par, or better, rounds.  Hahne finished T10 (73-70—143) at the season-opening Tiger Classic.  A WGCA All-America Scholar and second-team All-CAA performer last season, she compiled a 74.0 adjusted scoring average and 74.57 overall stroke average.  Hahne was the individual runner-up last fall at The Southern (71-72-72).  She was the 2023 Big South freshman of the year.
