Smith earns CAA Player of the Week

BUIES CREEK - DJ Smith has been tabbed CAA Player of the Week for the second time this season after a pair of big scoring performances.

Smith averaged 29.0 points per game in a 1-1 week for the Camels, including a season-high 32 at Elon. The North Little Rock, Ark., native started the week with 26 points in a home win over Hampton. He shot an efficient 12-of-13 at the free-throw line against the Pirates, while coming up with two rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals in the game.

He was red hot at Elon, pouring in 19 of his 32 points in the opening frame before finishing with a career-high seven three-pointers and a 9-of-10 showing at the charity stripe. The graduate guard also hauled in four rebounds and four assists. Smith now has 11 20-point games on the year, and has scored 20+ in four straight CAA games.

Smith has now taken over the CAA's top spot for scoring in league games, averaging 24.4 ppg in CAA play.

DJ Smith is the third player in the CAA to win the award multiple times this season, while Campbell becomes the first team with three total Player of the Week awards, thanks to Jeremiah Johnson earning the nod on Dec. 29.

Smith and the Camels return to action Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest at UNCW.
