WILMINGTON, NC – Campbell suffered its second straight one-possession road loss in a 78-75 defeat at UNCW Saturday night. The Camels led by as many as 13 in the second half, but couldn't hold on for the victory.
Campbell falls to 9-10, 3-3 in the CAA while UNCW improves to 17-2, 6-0 in the league.
Campbell had the ball last and took a trio of contested threes on the games final possession to tie it, but couldn't get one to fall.
DJ Smith led the effort with a game-high 24 points, his fifth straight 20-point game and 12
th on the year.
Jeremiah Johnson also tallied 20 points, his third 20-point outing of the season.
A back-and-forth first half ended with Campbell holding a four-point lead, 37-33. The first 20 minutes saw six ties and five lead changes.
DJ Smith led the Camels with 14 points, despite not connecting on a three-pointer. The Camels held Nolan Hodge, UNCW's top scorer, scoreless in the first and kept UNCW to shooting 37% as a team.
The Camels got off to a hot start to the second half with back-to-back threes and pushed the lead to 13 with 14 minutes to play. UNCW, fresh off a 24-point comeback win last weekend, worked back into the game to take a lead with five minutes to go. Campbell only retook the lead once, while UNCW went 4-4 from the foul line in the final minute to hold off the Camels for the 78-75 win.
Dovydas Butka logged a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 10 boards.
DJ Smith just missed a double-double of his own with nine rebounds.
UNCW was led by Patrick Wessler's 23 points on 10-12 FG. Madison Durr also poured in 20 for the Seahawks.
Campbell now sets for a third straight road game Thursday night at Charleston. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. on FloCollege.
