Camels earn first CAA victory with win over Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Fighting Camels bounced back from Friday's loss with a 62-51 win over Drexel, Sunday afternoon at Daskalakis Athletic Center. Olivia Tucker led the way with 18 points and seven rebounds.

Jasmine Nivar added 15 points and a career-high five assists, while Gianni Boone added 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

The Camels (8-7, 1-1) avoided their third consecutive 0-2 start to conference play, while the Dragons (7-5, 0-1) dropped their conference lid-lifter.

The teams played evenly through the first half of the first quarter with four lead changes in the first five minutes. Campbell's defense then held the Dragons scoreless over the final five minutes of the frame, building an 18-9 advantage.

The squad shot 7-of-12 from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, led by Tucker's nine points and a 10-0 run to finish the frame.

The teams played an even second quarter, with the Camels winning the frame, 11-10, to build a 10-point lead at halftime. The Camels had 16 rebounds at halftime, with seven players pulling down at least two boards.

CU held Amaris Baker, the CAA's leading scorer, to seven points on 2-of-8 shooting through the first 20 minutes. She would go on to score 22 points on 7-of-21 shooting.

Drexel's offense found its rhythm in the third quarter, as the team shot 6-of-9 from the field over the first six minutes to lessen Campbell's lead to four, 38-34.

A free throw from Julia Garcia Roig cut the lead to one with 1:52 left, but the Camels answered with a 6-0 run to build the lead back to seven, 46-39, going to the fourth quarter.

The Camels held the lead for the entire fourth quarter, as Tucker led the team with six points in the frame thanks to her 4-for-4 effort at the free throw line. Each team had nearly three-minute scoring droughts, and the Camels held the Dragons to just 20% (3-15) from the field.

Tucker, Boone and Jasmine Felton each played over 38 minutes, and Nivar played 37 minutes. N'na Konate played 17 minutes in her first career start, and Peris Smith and Emerson Thompson came off the bench to play 15 and 11 minutes respectively.

Campbell outscored Drexel in the paint, 22-16, and on fast break points, 7-0. The Camels also shot a season-high 82 percent (14-17) from the free throw line.
