Camels win Furman Intercollegiate

Killingstad claims individual honor, ties school 18-hole record (61)

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Benjamin Killingstad and Joachim Larsen Tegner finished 1-2 on the individual leader board and Campbell claimed a 15-stroke margin in the team standings to claim the Furman Intercollegiate on Tuesday at the Furman University Golf Course.

Killingstad (70-71-61—202, -11) tied the school 18-hole record in the final round to earn his first collegiate title, while Larsen Tegner (70-67-67—204, -9) posted his best result of the season to lead Campbell (281-284-273—838, -14) to a second-consecutive team championship.

"What makes me most proud of the last two weeks has been a collective team effort towards the things we are working on," said head coach Matt Moot, whose squad has won four times in its last nine outings dating to last spring.  "We have had significant contributions from six guys during these tournament wins, accentuated by some incredible individual play, like Benji being 27 under par his last two tournaments. The team battled some sickness this week, but handled it with toughness and class, never using it as an excuse to not accomplish their goals. I'm looking forward to the off-season rest for their health, but so excited to build on this momentum heading into the spring."

Last week, Killingstad was the individual runner-up when the Camels won the Elon Phoenix Invitational.  Over the last two events, Campbell is a combined 46 under par as a team.

"It feels awesome to end the semester with two team wins, a runner-up and individual win," said Killingstad, a junior from Blommenholm, Norway.  "It's really cool to get two wins back-to-back.  My game is trending very well. I've been working on the swing a little bit, made some changes and tried to be mentally in the right place, and it's been great."

On Monday, Killingstad made 11 birdies and one bogey to tie the school 18-hole record set by Ray Kraivixien on Apr. 14, 2018 at MacGregor Downs Country Club (par 72).  After making his only bogey of the day on the par-3 eighth hole, Killingstad birdied the next four holes, then three of his last four to close the event at 11-under on the par 71 Furman layout.

One week after shooting his previous collegiate low (64) at the Elon tournament, Killingstad again went low, this time etching his name at the top of the school record books.

Larsen Tegner was five-under on the day and 10-under for the tournament before he made his only bogey Monday on the par-three 16th hole.  He claimed his second collegiate runner-up finish, matching a second-place showing in last spring's Cutter Creek Intercollegiate.

Erik Johansson posted a third-straight top-10 finish (T9) on Monday (74-69-72—215), while William Sundborn (69-78-73—220) was T27, his best showing of the season.  Guillermo Ochoa finished T37 (72-77-73—222), and Petter Dale tied for 45th (73-78-73—224) while competing as an individual.

Campbell (281-284-273—838, -14) claimed the team trophy by 15 shots over runner-up Lipscomb (287-289-277—853, +1), while host Furman was third (291-289-282—862) in the 15-team field.  The Camels posted the eighth-best 54-hole score in the program's Division I era.

As a team, the Camels led the field with 57 birdies (11 more than Lipscomb) and paced all competitors in par-4 (even) and par-5 (-22) scoring.

Killingstad topped the 88-player field with 17 birdies, while also leading all players in par-4 (-10) scoring and tying for third on the par-5 holes (-6).

After tying the school 54-hole record last week at the Elon Phoenix Invitational when he finished a 16-under 197 (67-64-66), Killingstad's 3-round total (202) at Furman is tied for ninth-lowest in Campbell men's golf history.

Larsen Tegner finished second on the par-4 holes (-5), T3rd on par-5s (-6), made 37 pars (T5) and 10 birdies (T8) while notching his second top-10 outing of the fall season.

Johansson, who finished fifth at the last two tournaments, also made 10 birdies at Furman (T8), played the par-4 holes even (T8) and was 4-under on the par fives (T9).  Ochoa and Sundborn also made 10 birdies over the 54-hole event.

Camels will break from competition until Feb. 15-16 when they tee off in the Battle at Briar's Creek, hosted by the College of Charleston at the Golf Club at Briar's Creek in Johns Island, S.C.
