Camels defeat Tribe 1-0 for first victory of season

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Nicholas Vingsgaard's stunner from outside the box proved to be the difference maker, as the Fighting Camels came out victorious in a 1-0 decision against William & Mary Saturday night at Eakes Athletics Complex.

The Camels (1-12-2, 1-6 CAA) earned their first win of the season and first career win for Head Coach Ricky Davey by defeating the CAA foe. William & Mary moved to 7-6-2 and 2-3-2 in league play.

Kana Dube drew a foul on the border of the attacking third, and senior Xander Naguib played the free kick short to Vingsgaard who was positioned straight-on from goal about 25 yards out. Unmarked, he sent a shot on frame, and the goalkeeper's diving attempt was not strong enough to keep the ball out. The shot found the upper right corner for the opening goal 6:45 into the action.

Vingsgaard's effort was one of only four shots on the night for Campbell, which maintained the defensive pressure for the remainder of the match. William & Mary recorded 12 shots, only two of which were on frame. Senior goalie Kaeden Johnson was up to the task when called upon to preserve the clean sheet.

William & Mary threatened in the 54th minute, as a pass from the right wing played Brown Huffard behind the defense near the top of the 18-yard box. His rushed effort to beat Johson went off the left post and bounced directly to the keeper to cover the ball and prevent further threats.

The Tribe's latest chance came in the 87th minute. Substitute Ethan Roemisch had a chance from distance that cleared the crossbar by just a few inches.

William & Mary recorded seven corner kicks to Campbell's two, and each team was shown one yellow card.

As the final home match of the season, Campbell celebrated Senior Night and Alumni Day. Prior to the contest, the Camels honored seniors Kaeden Johnson, Xander Naguib, Zane Pederson and David Skorodumov.
