Johnson's buzzer beater lifts Camels past Tribe

BUIES CREEK – Jeremiah Johnson's buzzer beater lifted Campbell past William & Mary 84-83 Thursday night inside Gore Arena. Johnson got downhill from the top of the key and kissed it off the glass and in from the left block as time expired.

The win gives Campbell the season sweep of the Tribe and made Campbell winners of four of their last five. The Camels improve to 13-14, 7-7 in the CAA.

Johnson finished with a career-high 32 points plus a career-high seven assists. He also added seven boards to his line in an efficient, stat sheet-stuffing performance. The sophomore shot 10-16 from the floor, 6-8 from beyond the arc, and 6-7 at the charity stripe.

The lead changed hands three times in the final 12 seconds. Johnson hit a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left to put Campbell up one. W&M's Reese Miller went coast-to-coast to give the Tribe a one-point lead with six seconds to go. After advancing the ball and calling a timeout with 4.4 to play, Jeremiah Johnson collected the inbounds pass and drove to the rack for the win.

In a stark contrast to Sunday's game, Campbell came out red hot from three and hit triples for their first three buckets of the night. That stuck around as Campbell hit seven in the first half and finished 13-29 (45%) for the game. Johnson drilled six of them while Gregory and Smith each hit three.

Despite some hot first half shooting, the Camels still trailed by eight at the half, 43-35. The second half opened with Campbell cutting the deficit to one in the first five minutes. A 10-0 later in the half took the Camels from down six to up by four with 6:30 to go, with Gregory responsible for eight of those points.

The game went back and forth from there, setting up for Johnson's heroics at the buzzer.

Gregory and Smith finished with 16 points apiece to join Johnson in double figures. William & Mary was led by Reese Miller with 26 points.

Johnson joined DJ Smith as the second Camel this season to post a 30 point game, the first pair of Campbell teammates to reach that mark in the same season since Chris Clemons and Andrew Eudy in 2018-19.

Campbell now turns around to host UNCW Saturday at 4 p.m. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. Get here early for the pregame block party in front of Gore Arena beginning at 2 o'clock.
