BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell softball team opened the Campbell Invitational with a win over Iowa before falling in a slugfest to Miami (OH) on Friday night.
Campbell's offense stayed hot, scoring 20 runs across the two games. Sophomore
Hannah Cornetto led the Camels, belting two home runs and driving in six runs while drawing five walks to reach base eight times.
Senior
Charlie Montgomery went 4-for-8 with three RBIs on the day, and
Kasey Wolfe anchored the pitching staff with a strong outing in the opener.
GAME #1 – vs. Iowa
Campbell struck early and never trailed. The Camels scored two runs in the first inning after back-to-back singles from senior
Allyiah Swiney and graduate student
Amber DeSena, followed by an RBI single from Montgomery and a sacrifice fly by junior
Emily Allegood.
The Camels added to the lead in the second inning. After a leadoff single by Wolfe and a bases-loaded sequence, Cornetto launched a grand slam to center field.
Campbell pushed across two more runs in the fourth, highlighted by DeSena's RBI ground-rule double and another RBI single from Montgomery.
In the circle, Wolfe allowed one earned run over 4.1 innings to earn her third win of the season. Allegood worked 2.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits.
Cornetto's grand slam and Montgomery's 3-for-3 performance with two RBIs powered Campbell to eight runs on 12 hits.
GAME #2 – vs. Miami (OH)
In a high-scoring nightcap, Campbell and Miami (OH) traded runs before the RedHawks pulled away late.
Miami scored six runs over the first two innings. Campbell responded in the third when Cornetto connected on a two-run homer, her second of the day.
The Camels continued to chip away. Junior
Livie Davis drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and senior
Alyssa Armijo delivered a two-run double in the fifth to trim the deficit.
Trailing 13-5 in the sixth inning, Campbell erupted for seven runs. Montgomery drove in a run with a single, Armijo drew a bases-loaded walk, Wolfe added an RBI walk, and junior
Janel Day delivered a two-run double as a pinch hitter to pull the Camels within one run at 13-12.
That rally brought Campbell close but Miami answered with six runs in the seventh to seal the win.
Despite the loss, Campbell drew 15 walks and collected nine hits against Miami's pitching staff.

The Camels return to Amanda Littlejohn Stadium on Saturday for the second day of the Campbell Invitational. Campbell will face Miami (OH) at 3 p.m., followed by Iowa at 5:30 p.m.
