Camels clinch best start in program history with 13-9 win over Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Campbell earned a 13-9 win over Charlotte at Jerry Richardson Stadium Wednesday evening. Caroline Laur led the way with five goals and an assist, as the Camels clinched the best start to a season in program history.

The Camels improved to 5-1 on the season, their best six-game start since the program's inception in 2013. The 49ers fell to 1-4 after the result.

Charlotte opened the game with an early advantage after scoring five goals in the first quarter. Brenna Romanello recorded a hat trick in the first 15 minutes, leading to a 5-3 advantage.

The Fighting Camels responded with six unanswered goals in the second half to take a 9-5 lead into halftime. The effort was aided by Campbell's proficiency in the draw circle during the quarter, where it won four of the five draw controls.

Laur scored two goals in the frame, and McKenna Duncan scored her third goal of the half with 0.3 seconds remaining on the clock after a tremendous transition play from the visitors.

With 13 seconds left, Adria Welsh gained possession in the crease, and the Camels used four passes to race down the field, ending with Duncan finding the back of the net just before the halftime whistle.

Each team scored two goals in the third quarter as Campbell preserved its four-goal advantage. Laur and Duncan once again provided the goals, moving both to four goals on the day.

Laur added her fifth in the fourth quarter with 7:17 on the clock, setting a new career high and her second career hat trick. Chloe Annibell added her second of the day just a minute prior. Charlotte scored the final two goals of the game, but CU's defense did not allow a goal in the final three and a half minutes.

Campbell won 15 draw controls on the day, led by Drew Watkins who secured eight. The Camels outshot the 49ers, 39-20, and Charlotte had 19 turnovers compared to 13 for CU.
