GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Campbell softball team split its two games on the opening day of the Battle at the Max, hosted by East Carolina. The Camels defeated Rider, 7-5, before falling to St. John's, 8-3, on Friday at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
Across the two games, graduate student
Amber DeSena went 4-for-8 with four RBIs and a double, while junior
Madison Ford drove in four runs and added a double. Sophomore
Hannah Cornetto totaled three hits, a home run and two RBIs. In the circle, freshman
Katelyn Hubley earned the win against Rider with seven strikeouts in five innings.
GAME #1 – vs. Rider
In the first game, Campbell used a six-run second inning to secure a 7-5 victory over Rider.
After Rider scored an unearned run in the top of the second, the Camels responded in the bottom half of the frame. Cornetto opened the scoring with a solo home run to center field, her fourth of the season, before Campbell loaded the bases with a single from senior

Kylie Specht and sophomore
Emma Slutzah.
Junior
Livie Davis followed with an RBI single to give Campbell the lead, and Ford delivered a two-run double to center field. Senior
Allyiah Swiney added a sacrifice fly, and DeSena capped the inning with an RBI single to make it 6-1. Campbell added an insurance run in the sixth when DeSena drove in Swiney with another RBI single.
Hubley earned the win after allowing one unearned run on four hits in five innings, striking out seven.
GAME #2 – vs. St. John's
In the second game of the back-to-back, Campbell dropped an 8-3 decision to St. John's.
St. John's scored three runs in the first inning, but the Camels answered in the second. Montgomery led off with a single and scored on an RBI single from Slutzah. Senior
Alyssa Armijo followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Red Storm added three runs in the third to extend the lead to 6-2, but Campbell answered in the bottom of the inning. DeSena doubled to center and scored on a single from Cornetto to make it 6-3.
St. John's tacked on two more runs in the fifth to push the margin to five, and Campbell was unable to mount a late rally.
