Towson, Md. – Campbell led by as many as 14 in the second half, but did not make a field goal in the final six minutes of the game en route to a 71-67 loss to Towson Saturday afternoon.
Campbell falls to 13-17, 7-10 in the CAA. Towson moves to 16-14, 8-9.
Chris Fields Jr. led the Camels with 17 points and 9 rebounds, with
Dovydas Butka adding 16 and 8 in a solid day for the Campbell front court.
Campbell jumped ahead quick before Towson regained the lead thanks to an early 14-2 run to lead by as many as six, thanks to 13 early points from Tyler Tejada. The Camels answered with a run of their own, closing on a 13-4 run over the final 5:30 of action, capped by a Cook three-pointer with 13 seconds left to send Campbell to the half up 36-30.
Fields Jr. and
Dovydas Butka had big first halves with 10 points each as Campbell outscored the Tigers 28-10 in the paint in the early going.
A quick 10-2 run to start the second half put Campbell up by 14, the largest lead of the night for either team. Towson began slowly chipping away, eventually overtaking the Camels with 1:00 left to play.
Dovydas Butka logged Campbell's final field goal with 6:12 to go, with Campbell's only four points the remainder of the game coming at the foul line.
Towson gave Campbell life by missing a pair of front end of one-and-ones in the final minute, but the Camels failed to score on both successive trips.
Down two with 11 seconds left,
Tasos Cook couldn't get a runner to go, and the putback attempt was turned away. A pair of Tiger free throws put the game on ice, 71-67.
Campbell had four score in double figures, with Gregory (13) and Cook (10) joining Fields and Butka.
Towson was led by 20 points from Jack Doumbia Jr., including scoring seven in a row to give the Tigers the late lead.
Campbell now turns to the regular season finale, a home date with NC A&T on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m., with Campbell to honor eight seniors pregame.
