Softball wraps up Battle at the Max with win over ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Campbell softball team closed the Battle at the Max tournament with a 9-4 win over host East Carolina on Sunday afternoon.

The Camels used a five-run first inning and steady pitching from freshman Katelyn Hubley to secure the road victory.

Senior Charlie Montgomery opened the scoring with an RBI single, followed by run-scoring hits from freshman Kylie Specht and sophomore Emma Slutzah. Sophomore Haley Krebs scored on an ECU fielding error before junior Livie Davis capped the inning with an RBI single up the middle to give the Camels a 5-0 lead.

The Pirates answered with three runs in the bottom of the first, but Hubley and the defense limited ECU to one run over the final six innings. Hubley went the distance, allowing four runs, two earned, on four hits while striking out two to improve to 6-1 on the season.

Campbell added to its lead in the fifth inning when senior Allyiah Swiney drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and graduate student Amber DeSena followed with an RBI single to make it 7-4. The Camels put the game away in the sixth as Specht doubled down the right-field line to score Montgomery and Slutzah followed with an RBI single for a 9-4 advantage.

Montgomery led the offense, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Slutzah finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Specht added two hits and two RBIs as Campbell Camels totaled 12 hits.
