BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell clawed back from a six-goal deficit, but Towson held off the Camels 12-11 in the CAA opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Barker-Lane Stadium.
The Tigers (3-5, 1-0 CAA) won their second straight, ending Campbell's (8-2, 0-1 CAA) school record eight game winning streak.
The Fighting Camels trailed 12-6 with 2:35 remaining in the third period after Katie Roszko's strike, but
Caroline Laur answered on CU's next two possessions, notching a free position goal with 1:52 to go in the period, followed by another score 30 seconds into the fourth on a feed from
Chloe Annibell, cutting the deficit to 12-8.
Campbell scored the next three goals, including a pair from
Paige White, and another from
Emma Penkunas, making it a one-goal game with 5:47 on the clock.
The Camels were able to three more shots over the remainder of the game, with two denied by Towson goalie Jenna Cardeno, and the Tigers held possession, fending off the comeback.
Hailey Waldron led Towson with three goals, while Savannah Safchuck totaled four points on two goals and two assists. DeMaio added two goals and an assist with two ground balls and a caused turnover, while Valerie Thompson tacked on two goals with four draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers, and Cardeno made 10 saves.
White and
Drew Watkins paced the Camels with three goals apiece, with Watkins posting four draw controls a pair of ground balls, while Laur collected two goals with an assist.
Hailey Kohlmann also caused four turnovers with two ground balls, while
Adria Welsh made seven saves with three ground balls.
Next up, the Camels will step back out of conference play for the final time this season, hosting Radford at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18 for Education Day.
