Campbell drops two on opening day of Ohio State Tournament

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Campbell softball team opened the Ohio State Tournament with two losses Friday in Columbus, falling 8-2 to Louisville before dropping an 8-6 extra‑inning decision to host Ohio State.

Senior Charlie Montgomery extended her hitting streak to 20 games, the longest by a Camel in at least the last 10 seasons. She finished the day 4-for-9 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.

Campbell moves to 16-13 overall.

GAME #1 – Campbell 2, Louisville 8

Louisville struck early, scoring once in the second inning and adding three more in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.

Campbell answered in the fifth when Montgomery singled and two runs scored following a Louisville error. The Cardinals responded with four runs in the sixth and held the Camels scoreless the rest of the way.

Montgomery went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Four other Camels recorded hits, including doubles from senior Allyiah Swiney and graduate student Amber DeSena.

GAME #2 – Campbell 6, Ohio State 8

The nightcap featured three ties across the final four innings before Ohio State walked it off in the eighth.

The Buckeyes opened with a two-run homer in the first and added a run in the fourth for a 3-0 advantage. Freshman Kylie Specht laced a deep hit in center field for a three-run double to kickstart the Campbell offense and tie the game in the top of the fifth.

After Ohio State regained the lead in the bottom half, junior Grace Kealy launched her second home run of the season to even the score at 4-4 in the sixth.

The Buckeyes hit another solo homer in the sixth, but Campbell answered again in the seventh. Junior Madison Ford battled back from an 0-2 count and reached on a grounder that turned into a fielding error, allowing two runs to score and giving the Camels their first lead of the night.

Ohio State forced extras with a solo home run in the seventh, then ended the game with its fourth homer of the night in the eighth.

Montgomery, DeSena and Specht each recorded two hits. Specht drove in three runs, while DeSena went 2-for-3 with a team‑high two runs scored.
