BUIES CREEK — Campbell baseball secured its fourth consecutive series after defeating Charleston, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.
Campbell continues its best start to CAA play moving to 10-1 and 17-9 overall. Charleston drops to 10-16 overall and 5-6 in league action.
Charleston (10-16, 5-6 CAA) struck first for the second time of the series after working three straight walks to lead off the game, a fourth walk brought in the go-ahead run but the Camels escaped with back-to-back strikeouts in the bases loaded jam.
Campbell (17-9, 10-1 CAA) quickly answered with a pair of runs to take the lead for good in the bottom of the opening frame.
Joe Simpson led off with a base hit before scoring from first on an RBI double from
Carlos Lugo. Lugo would then go on to score on a wild pitch after advancing to third on a ground out.
The Camels would then extend its lead out to 5-1 in the second as
Trent Rumley doubled down the left field line to plate
Jett Music and
Andrew Schuldt. Music led off the inning with a walk before Schuldt drew a hit by pitch. Rumley would go on to score on a passed ball.
The offense added insurance in the sixth as Lugo registered his second RBI of the game on a groundout to make it 6-1.
Charleston cut into the deficit in the eighth with a pair of runs after working the bases loaded making it 6-3. After an RBI walk and RBI single three quick outs got the Camels out of the inning.
The Cougars made things interesting in the ninth bringing the tying run to the plate after back-to-back base hits, but a fielder's choice to third, a fly out, and ground out ended the threat for the final.
David Rossow (5-1) settled in after the first and worked six innings allowing just one run on two hits. The right-hander collected nine strikeouts and moves to 5-1 on the season.
Beau Brailey (1) picked up his first save as a Camel tossing the final three outs in the ninth.
Simpson led the offense going 3-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored while Lugo went 2-for-5 with two doubles, a run scored, and two RBI.
