Eight-run first inning powers Camels to series sweep

ELON, N.C. – The Campbell softball team produced its second straight double-digit scoring performance to secure a CAA series sweep over Elon, 15-4, on Sunday afternoon at Hunt Softball Park.

The Camels wasted no time, scoring eight runs in the first inning. Freshman Kylie Specht earned the first on an RBI single to center field. Junior Grace Kealy drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run, and sophomore Hannah Cornetto added another with a single through the right side.

With two outs, the Camels strung together four consecutive run-scoring at-bats, beginning with a single from sophomore Haley Krebs. Senior Charlie Montgomery and graduate student Amber DeSena followed with back-to-back RBI singles. Specht then returned to the plate and delivered a two-run single in her second at-bat of the inning. Campbell totaled seven hits in the frame, six of which drove in runs, on 48 pitches.

Elon answered with a run in the bottom half of the first, but the Camels added to their lead in the second. Campbell collected five hits and scored four runs in the inning, with Montgomery and Specht each driving in runs on singles. Specht finished the inning with two RBIs. Through the first two innings, Specht and Montgomery combined to go 6-for-6 with seven RBIs.

The Phoenix scored three runs in the fifth to extend the game to a sixth inning. Campbell added two more runs on RBI singles from junior Devin Davis and freshman Lexi Kirby.

In the circle, juniors Kasey Wolfe and Ryleigh Bennett split time. Wolfe earned the win, tossing 3.2 innings while allowing two hits and one earned run with one walk.

Campbell finished with a season-high 17 hits from nine players and matched a season high with 13 RBIs across eight players. Montgomery, Specht and DeSena each recorded three hits, while Specht led all players with five RBIs, the most by a Campbell player this season.
