WASHINGTON, D.C. – Campbell picked up the first CAA Tournament win in program history with a 96-89 win over Stony Brook in the second round Saturday afternoon. The Camels will now face top-seeded UNCW in the quarterfinals tomorrow at noon.
An early 15-2 run took the Camels from down seven to up six and in the lead for good. Campbell could never pull away from the Seawolves, but didn enough to hold the lead for the final 29 minutes of the game.
The Camels put pressure on the Stony Brook defense and turned that in to a historic day at the foul line, setting new program records for both makes (37) and attempts (56) from the charity stripe.
Dovydas Butka set the tone in the first half with 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists by the break. Campbell dished out 11 assists on 17 made buckets in the first half to help shoot 63% from the floor in the opening 20 minutes (17-28) and take an eight point lead into the locker room at 48-40.
The Camels stretched the lead to as many as 16 with eight minutes to go in the game before the Seawolves began mounting a comeback. Stony Brook whittled it down to as few as four points, but the Camels had answers and never let it get to a one possession game.
Campbell shot 66% at the foul line for the game, but were steady late and went 13-16 at the stripe in the final four minutes to hold off the charge.
Five Camels finished with double figure points, led by 20 from
Jeremiah Johnson. Butka stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, 6 boards, and a career-high nine assists.
DJ Smith added 18, with Newton and Cook scoring 15 and 12, respectively. Newton's 15 points came on a perfect 7-7 from the floor.
Andrej Shoshkikj paced the Seawolves with 35 points, leading three players with 20+. Erik Pratt scored 23 and Rob Brown III scored 22, giving SBU three players combining for 80 of their 89 points.
