BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell softball team posted its second-straight shutout over Hampton on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Pirates in five innings, 14-0.
The Camel offense collected 11 hits and took advantage of three hit batters, three wild pitches and five Hampton errors to score 14 runs, the second-most in a game this season.
Sophomore
Hannah Cornetto opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single, bringing home graduate student
Amber DeSena after her leadoff single.
After a scoreless second inning, the Camels broke the game open with five runs in the third. DeSena led off the inning with a double and later scored on a Hampton throwing error. Senior
Allyiah Swiney followed by scoring on a wild pitch. Campbell then strung together three straight singles, with two more runs scoring on a Hampton error and another on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 6-0.
Campbell added five more runs in the fourth inning. Junior
Janel Day and sophomore
Emma Slutzah each drew hit-by-pitches with the bases loaded to bring in runs. Junior
Madison Ford followed with a bases-clearing triple, plating three runs and pushing the lead to 11-0.
The Camels tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning, with one scoring on a wild pitch and two more crossing the plate on another Hampton error. Campbell scored 14 runs despite recording just six RBIs as a team.
Junior
Kasey Wolfe tossed a complete-game shutout, striking out a season-high five to earn her fourth win of the season.
At the plate, DeSena went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Swiney finished 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored, while senior
Charlie Montgomery went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Ford went 1-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs.

The Camels face the Lady Pirates in the final game of the three-game series at 1 p.m. Sunday in Hampton, Va. A win would give Campbell its first CAA series sweep of the season. The game will be available to watch on FloCollege.
