BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell softball team collected its third consecutive win Sunday to complete the road sweep of Hampton, defeating the Pirates in six innings, 16-2.
Defense dominated the first three innings, with neither team scoring more than one run. Campbell's lone run during that stretch came in the second inning when junior
Madison Ford lifted a sacrifice fly to score senior
Charlie Montgomery.
The Camels' offense broke open in the fourth inning when senior
Alyssa Armijo launched a three-run home run over the left-field wall, the first home run of her collegiate career. Sophomore
Hannah Cornetto added another run in the inning when she reached on a Hampton fielding error, extending the lead to 5-1.
The Pirates scored one more run in the bottom of the fourth, but it was all Campbell the rest of the way. The Camels scored 11 runs through the fifth and sixth innings, including eight in the sixth.
In the fifth, Armijo drove in a run on a fielder's choice, and
Allyiah Swiney drove in two on a single.
Campbell's offense exploded in the sixth inning. Ford opened the scoring with a two-run double to right-center, and junior
Livie Davis delivered a pinch-hit RBI triple to right field. Swiney followed with an RBI single for her third RBI of the afternoon. Freshman
Kylie Specht drew a bases-loaded walk to force in another run, and sophomore
Emma Slutzah singled to shortstop to bring in one more. A pair of wild pitches then scored Montgomery and Specht to cap the eight-run frame.
Junior
Ryleigh Bennett started in the circle and pitched two innings, allowing one earned run on five hits. Junior
Emily Allegood earned the win in relief, pitching the final four innings and allowing one unearned run on seven hits with one strikeout.
Campbell finished with 12 hits and 13 RBIs, including three extra-base hits. The 16 runs marked a season high for the Camels.
Three Camels recorded at least three RBIs in Armijo, Swiney and Ford. Armijo went 1-for-3 with a home run, four RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base. Swiney led the offense, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Slutzah finished 1-for-1 with three runs scored, an RBI and four walks.
