Camels set program record with eighth consecutive win

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Fighting Camels won their eighth game in a row to set a new program record, defeating ECU, 16-9, Sunday afternoon at Barker-Lane Stadium.

Emma Penkunas and Paige White each tallied four goals to lead Campbell (8-1) over visiting ECU (3-3). McKenna Duncan recorded two assists, moving her total to six multi-assist games this year.

Rachel Chessock scored three goals for the visitors, but she was the only Pirate with multiple points.

Goalkeeper Adria Welsh had a strong day between the pipes, recording 10 saves for the first time since the season opener.

The teams started the first quarter by scoring two goals apiece, but Campbell pulled away with four straight goals to eventually take a 6-3 lead after the first 15 minutes. The Pirates outshot the Camels in the frame, but CU efficiently converted all six of its shots into goals. Three of White's four goals came in the first for an early hat trick.

Campbell extended its lead to five with a 4-2 second quarter. White's fourth goal of the day came nearly halfway through the frame on a free position attempt.

ECU scored the next two goals, but Campbell responded with goals from Bridget Ahlgren, Emily Wilson and Caroline Laur for the 10-5 halftime advantage.

Campbell continued to pull away in the third quarter with four goals while holding the Pirates scoreless. Penkunas scored two in the frame, and Emma Jankowiak and Duncan recorded their only goals of the contest as well.

The Campbell defense held ECU scoreless for over 20 minutes of game time and scored seven goals in that same time frame.

Penkunas rippled the net for the final time in the fourth quarter in addition to Hanna Russell, tying the largest goal output this season for the Camels.
