HEMPSTEAD, NY – The Campbell softball team dropped the second game of its three-game road series against Hofstra, 9-7, at Bill Edwards Stadium.
Campbell's offense carried over its momentum from Friday, scoring four runs in the opening inning. Sophomore
Emma Slutzah led off with a single, and senior
Charlie Montgomery followed with an RBI double down the left-field line to open the scoring. Freshman
Kylie Specht added a two-RBI triple, and junior
Madison Ford lifted a sacrifice fly to give the Camels a 4-0 lead after the top of the first.
Hofstra responded in the second, retiring Campbell in order before scoring a run. The Pride held the Camels scoreless again in the third and added two more runs in the bottom half to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Campbell added to its lead with a run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Slutzah delivered an RBI single in the fourth, and senior
Allyiah Swiney hit a solo home run to center field in the fifth.
The Pride never relented, answering with six runs in the fifth inning. Hofstra capitalizied on five hits and a Campbell error to take a 9-6 lead.
Campbell trimmed the deficit in the sixth when junior
Grace Kealy reached on a fielder's choice that brought in a run. The Camels entered the seventh trailing by two but were retired in order.
Juniors
Ryleigh Bennett and
Cassiti Baroni split time in the circle, combining for four strikeouts and allowing three earned runs. Slutzah went 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI. Swiney finished with two RBIs and her seventh home run of the season.
