Campbell scores 18, routs Elon in five innings

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell softball team produced its highest run total since 2022, rolling past Elon, 18-1, in five innings Saturday afternoon at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

The Camels scored 18 runs on 17 hits and capitalized on five Elon errors to secure the run-rule victory. The Phoenix scored in the opening inning but managed just three hits the rest of the way.

The Camels answered in the bottom for their first score. Sophomore Emma Slutzah and senior Allyiah Swiney singled, and senior Charlie Montgomery reached on an error to load the bases. Freshman Kylie Specht drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game.

Campbell added two runs in the second. Swiney drove in a run on a fielder's choice, and Montgomery followed with an RBI double.

Campbell broke the game open with an 11-run third inning on eight hits, sending 16 batters to the plate. Junior Madison Ford reached on an error to lead off, followed by a single from sophomore Hannah Cornetto. Another Elon error allowed junior Livie Davis to reach and score Ford.

After a passed ball and a single by sophomore Haley Krebs, Campbell continued to capitalize. Graduate student Amber DeSena delivered a two-run single, Swiney drew a walk, and Montgomery added a two-run single to left. Specht followed with a walk, setting up Ford in her second plate appearance of the inning for a two-run hit.

Cornetto added an RBI double, and after a single from Livie Davis and another Elon error, Slutzah capped the inning with a two-run double to make it 14-1.

Campbell added four more runs in the fourth. Freshman Lexi Kirby drove in a run, sophomore Livie Davis followed with an RBI single, and Slutzah delivered her second two-run double of the game.

The Camels finished 12-for-24 with runners in scoring position and did not strike out.

Junior Kasey Wolfe earned the win, allowing one run on five hits while striking out nine over five innings.

Montgomery went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Slutzah also went 3-for-4, driving in four runs with two doubles. Ten Campbell players recorded hits, and each drove in at least one run. Five players had multiple hits, and four recorded multiple RBIs.

The 18 runs marked Campbell's highest single-game total since February 2022.
