Special project starts to improve tennis courts

Part of President Downs’ CampbellNOW initiative

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell University donors have the opportunity to participate in a special project to upgrade to the courts at the Nisbet Tennis Center.

As a part of University President Dr. William Downs' CampbellNOW fundraising initiative, the tennis courts have been identified as a priority for new investment.  "I'm so proud of our student-athletes and coaches who compete in the sport of tennis," praised President Downs.  "They come to Campbell from across the country and from around the world to play championship-caliber tennis; as such, they deserve championship-quality courts.  I'm excited to work with Tennis to raise the dollars we need to deliver on the promise of fresh new surfaces free from the current cracks."

President Downs has committed half of the funds necessary to complete the project, and he has challenged the Campbell Athletics community to generate the other half.  "My hope is that we can secure the funds promptly so that our new-look tennis complex is ready for competition in the fall," added Downs.

When the resurfacing project is complete, the courts will be painted bright orange with a gray slate outside, further branding the facility with a true home court look.

"We're incredibly grateful for President Downs' leadership and vision in committing significant resources to enhance our tennis facility," said head women's tennis coach Mike Stevens, who has guided his team to three-straight berths in the CAA Championship tournament.  "This investment speaks volumes about the value being placed on our student-athletes and the future of our program. At the same time, this is a shared effort – one that will require the support of our alumni, supporters, and community to help us raise the remaining funds needed to fully realize this project. We're excited about what this facility will mean for recruiting, development, and the overall student-athlete experience, and we're confident that, together, we can bring this vision to completion."

"We are excited about moving forward with this project as this will benefit the men's and women's programs greatly," said David Johnson, who has served as head men's coach since 1999.  "This proposed upgrade will no doubt enhance the student-athlete experience, assist with recruiting and draw more attention to our sport, all of which will be welcomed."

In addition to competing at the highest level of collegiate athletics, Campbell's tennis teams routinely rank among CU's highest-achieving programs in the classroom.  Both teams compiled a cumulative grade-point average of better than 3.3 during the 2025 fall semester.

Highlighted by recent upgrades, the Nisbet Tennis Center has been home to both the men's and women's Fighting Camels tennis programs since 1985. During the summer of 2018, the facility added brand new locker rooms for both programs as well an additional office space for the coaching staff and a player lounge equipped with couches and a flat screen TV.
