Camels rally for reverse sweep of ODU

Box Score GREENVILLE, NC - The Fighting Camels pulled of the reverse sweep to upend Old Dominion in five sets Friday afternoon. ODU was on the verge of a three-set sweep, leading by six in the third before the Camels rallied and flipped the result.

The win takes Campbell to 4-6 on the year with one non-conference match remaining.

The Camels dropped a tight first set where neither side led by more than three. Campbell stayed a point or two back down the stretch but could never draw even with the Monarchs who ultimately took the set 25-23.

The second set was there for the taking tied 18-18, but it was Old Dominion that closed with a 7-1 run to pull away in the final stages and claim the frame 25-19.

Campbell appeared to be on the edge of being swept after a 6-0 ODU run put the Monarchs up six at 19-13 in the third. The Camels answered that run with a 8-0 run of their own to vault into the lead and help nab the set 25-21 to keep the match alive.

Momentum stayed with the Camels, rolling to a 25-19 fourth set win. No dramatic comeback was needed in the fourth, with Campbell pulling away in the middle stages of the frame and holding off an attempted ODU charge late. Campbell hit a match-best .242 in the fourth set to force the deciding frame.

CU continued its fifth-set prowess over the past few seasons and finished the match with a 15-7 final set. The defense played its part in the fifth to hold ODU to hitting -.067. Leah Freesemann put the finishing touches on the match with her 10th kill of the night.

Hannah Pattie led the Camels in a double-double effort with 23 assists and a career-high 20 digs. Fellow setter Lexi Jodie notched the first double-double of her career with 19 assists and 10 digs, both season-best for the rookie. Emma McCartney paced the attack with 14 kills, though it was a balanced effort with seven Camels notching five or more kills.

ODU was led by 15 kills from Elisa Maggi.

Campbell is back in action tomorrow at 4 pm against ECU in the final non-conference match of the season. That match is streaming on ESPN+.
