BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell starts its 2026-27 women's golf season Sunday with the opening round of the Golfweek Fall Challenge at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawley's Island, S.C.
 
The 54-hole, 3-day, 24-team event includes Miami of the ACC, plus Campbell and CAA rival UNCW.  Regional rivals in the field also include Coastal Carolina and High Point.  Play begins Sunday at 7:30 a.m.
 
For the first time since the fall of 1990, Campbell will enter a women's golf tournament with someone other than John Crooks as head coach.  Val Patino was promoted from Associate Head Coach to the top spot over the summer.  Crooks – a member of the WGCA Hall of Fame – remains on staff as Director of Golf.
 
Patino's lineup includes senior Jade Potter, junior Fanni Gronlund, plus a trio of highly-regarded freshmen in Louisa Bloomfield, Yukino Kudo and Miah Rivas.
 
Since 2012, Campbell has claimed seven team titles (2012, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2024) in addition to a pair of runner-up finishes (2014, 2016) on the Mike Strantz designed Caledonia layout.

The Course – Caledonia Golf & Fish Club (Par 71, 6526 yards): Caledonia was ranked No.-27 in the 2014 Golf Magazine "Top 100 You Can Play" course listing and is annually ranked on "America's 100 Greatest Public courses" list by Golf Digest.  The 6,526-yard Mike Strantz design has been described as having "18 signature holes," with holes routed around majestic oaks and meandering streams. The picturesque 18th hole borders the Plantation's old rice field, and requires a precise tee shot that sets up a difficult second shot: a forced carry onto a green at the foot of the clubhouse.
 
The Coach: Val Patino is in her third season on the Fighting Camel staff and first a head coach after being promoted from associate head coach this summer.  In two seasons assisting Hall of Fame coach John Crooks, Patino helped lead the Camels to one postseason bid (2025) and a pair of third-place finishes in the Coastal Athletic Conference Championship.  She has mentored 2025 CAA golfer of the year Alicia Olsson and the 2025 CAA rookie of the year Fanni Gronlund.  A former five-time Big Sky all-conference performer at Idaho, Patino was named assistant coach at Campbell in August 2024 and elevated to Associate Head Coach one year later.  She
spent two years as graduate assistant coach at Ball State.
 
The Lineup:
 
Freshman Miah Rivas (Guadalajara, Mexico) is making her collegiate debut at the Golfweek Fall Challenge.  She has been ranked among the top five players in Mexico and is coming off a summer when she won three tournaments – the National Cup José de Jesús Rodríguez, Mexican Olympics CONADE and the Gaby López Open.  She helped lead Mexico to a fifth place finish in the 2026 America Cup and participated in the 77th US Girls Junior Championship.
 
Senior Jade Potter (Edinburgh, Scotland) was a member of the 2026 CAA All-Championship team after turning in a T4 finish at the league tournament.  She set a school record for lowest 36-hole score (143) at CAA Championship and produced Campbell's second-best finish and second-best 54-hole total (221) at CAA tourney since Campbell joined the league in 2023-24.  Potter fired a collegiate low 70 (-1) in final round of 2025 Golfweek Fall Challenge.  Over the summer, she represented Scotland at theEuropean Ladies Team Championship and Home Internationals.  She finished 4th at the Belgium National Championship.

Freshman Yukino Kudo (Tokyo, Japan) is also making her first collegiate start at the Golfweek Fall Challenge.  A graduate of Montverde Academy in Florida, Kudo won the opening event in the 2025 IJGA × NXXT College Pathway Series and competed in the Florida State Girls Junior Championship.  She also won the 2025 Lake Nono Junior Open.
 
Junior Fanni Gronlund (Kirkkonummi, Finland) owns the 12th-lowest scoring average (min. 50 rounds) in school history (74.93).  She has posted three top-10 finishes in 20 outings and placed among the top-10 golfers in both the '25 (T10) and '26 (7th) CAA Championship.  Over the summer, Gronlund won the Finnish Strokeplay Championship and led Finland to a fourth-place finish in Women's European Team Championship.  She was named CAA Rookie of the Year in 2025 and is a two-time WGCA All-America Scholar.

Freshman Louisa Bloomfield (Braunschweig, Germany) will tee off as a collegiate for the first time at the Golfweek Fall Challenge.  She helped her club win the second division title in the 2026 German National League and competed in the German National Championship.  Bloomfield won the GVNB Landesmeisterschaften Damen WAGR event, finished fourth at 2025 German National Match Play Championship and eighth at the 2025 German U18 Girls national championship.
 
Next: Following the Golfweek Fall Challenge, the Camels will travel to the Brittany Kelly Classic, hosted by Ball State Sept. 14-15 at The Players Club at Woodland Trails in Yorktown, Ind.
