Calhoon joined the Campbell baseball staff as a volunteer assistant coach in August 2022 with over ten years of coaching experience. He was named Assistant Coach in July 2023 after being with the team for one season.
In the 2023 season, Calhoon helped the Camels to a 46-15 record and an appearance in the Columbia Regional final. The team won their second-straight Big South Championship and fifth-straight conference regular season title. Under Calhoon's development, Grant Knipp was named All-Big South First Team as a catcher. He was named the Big South Tournament MVP, and he earned a spot on the all-tournament team at the Columbia Regional.
Calhoon comes to Campbell after his most recent stint as the head coach of Biola University (La Mirada, Calif.) for three seasons. At Biola, he led the team to it’s highest-ever NCAA DII ranking reaching No. 8 in the nation. He coached five all-conference players, two-all-region players and one all-American there, along with an eighth-round draft pick and another MLB free agent signee.Â
Calhoon built a national recruiting base during his time at Biola, recruiting players from 14 states and one Canadian Province to join his program in southern California.Â
Prior to Biola, he made stops as the recruiting coordinator at Point Loma Nazarene and the assistant coach at UC San Diego and Westmont College.Â
At Point Loma, he helped guide the team to a 2019 NCAA Regional appearance and coached the NCAA DII Player of the Year in Micah Pries.
His time as UCSD was highlighted by a pair of West Region Championships in 2017 and 2018, and was the NCAA DII College World Series runner up.Â
Calhoon is a 2013 graduate of Niagara University with a B.S. in Communication Studies. He later earned his M.A. in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University Irvine in 2018.Â
Calhoon made three stops during his playing career at Azusa Pacific University (NAIA), Skagit Valley College (NWAC), and two years at Niagara University. At Niagara he appeareard in 59 games over two seasons as a catcher for the Purple Eagles.Â
Beyond coaching, Calhoon was chosen to speak at San Diego State as part of the ABCA Barnstormers West Coach Clinics where he presented on both baserunning and catching during the evnet. He spoke again at the 2019 ABCA National Coaches Convention.Â
In 2021, he was tabbed to the Team USA task force to identify and select national team players for USA Baseball.Â
