Ryan Bertram is in his first season as the director of operations for the Campbell baseball team.
Bertram is responsible for the daily assistance of the baseball program. He assists in team scheduling, equipment orders, camp planning and programming, marketing and sponsorship, and the team's community service efforts.
Bertram comes to Buies Creek after spending the 2018 season as a volunteer assistant coach at Southern Illinois (SIU). He coached alongside 2015 Campbell baseball alum Seth LaRue who was in his second season coaching the Salukis.
At Southern Illinois, Bertram worked primarily with the SIU catchers and assisted with the hitters. Three hitters earned all-conference honors in 2018 and the Salukis racked up 131 stolen bases, which ranked fourth nationally.
“Welcoming Ryan Bertram to our program is an immediate win for us,” Haire said. “This young man has won championships on the national level, comes from a deep baseball background, and brings a work ethic to the office every day that is both positive and contagious. We are pleased to have him on board and look forward to seeing him continue to grow within this profession.”
A 2016 graduate of Southern Indiana (USI), Bertram played for the Eagles from 2013-16 and then coached in 2017. As a player, he was the starting catcher on the 2014 Division II National Championship team and won two NCAA Midwest Regionals. A three-time all-conference selection, Bertram finished his collegiate playing career with a .329 batting average and 158 hits.
In his lone season as a coach at USI, in 2017, Bertram helped lead the Eagles to a conference championship and the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Regional. Bertram mentored seven all-conference players, while working directly with the catchers and outfielders and spending time as the third base coach.
Four players under Bertram’s leadership have been selected in the MLB Draft, two each from Southern Illinois and Southern Indiana.
During the summer of 2018, Bertram was the head coach of the Richmond Jazz in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. He also coached the Indiana Bulls travel organization from 2013-16.
A native of Zionsville, Ind., Bertram joins assistant coach Chris Marx as the second CU baseball staff member to have spent time at Southern Indiana. Marx also won a Division II National Championship during his tenure at USI, helping lead the Eagles to the title in 2010.
