Chris Long

Chris Long was promoted to associate head coach ahead of the 2024-25 season, his sixth season with the Fighting Camels. He joined the staff in July 2019 as Director of Basketball Operations, a role he held for three seasons before spending the last two as assistant coach.

Long joined the Campbell staff after a six-year stint at Elon, where he served five seasons as assistant coach under Matt Matheny.

Over the last five seasons, Long has played a vital role in a program that has posted 78 victories and reached the 2021 and 2023 Big South title games before transitioning to the CAA.

He helped the Camels post a 14-18, 8-10 record in the program’s inaugural CAA campaign, splitting all but one conference weekend. Anthony Dell’Orso was tabbed second-team all-CAA after averaging 19.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, both marks the best on the team.

Long helped guide the Camels to a sweep of his former employer and alma mater, Elon, thanks to a buzzer-beater by Dell’Orso on the road and a 10-point home win on national TV. Campbell went 2-0 in nationally televised games in ‘23-’24, also defeating UNCW 105-100 in 2OT, an instant classic and record-breaking night in Gore Arena.

The 2022-23 squad came up one win shy of the NCAA Tournament, reaching the Big South championship game after reeling off three straight wins at the conference tournament. The Camels topped Presbyterian, defending champion Longwood, and second seeded Radford to reach the title game for the second time in three years. The Camels fell to top-seeded Asheville 77-74 in the championship.

Long helped develop Big South freshman of the year Anthony Dell’Orso, who led all league freshmen in scoring (12.5), rebounding (5.8) and free throw percentage (.830). Ricky Clemons earned all-conference honors, while Laurynas Vaistaras was named to the Big South all-academic team.

The Camels won a share of the 2022 Appalachian State MTE, defeating eventual ASUN champ Kennesaw State and Sun Belt member Appalachian. Campbell also played ACC member NC State to a two-possession game (67-73) in Raleigh.

The 2021-22 Camels finished with 16 wins and ranked among the nation’s most disciplined teams – committing the third-fewest fouls and making the sixth-fewest turnovers among 350 programs.  CU also led the Big South in assist-turnover ratio and fewest turnovers per game (10.4).

Campbell posted wins over 2021 NCAA tournament team Hartford and Conference USA member Marshall, while taking ninth-ranked Duke to the wire before falling at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

“Chris Long has been with us the last three years and was significantly over-qualified and underutilized in his role of director of operations,” said head coach Kevin McGeehan.  “He is a well-rounded coach who has many years of experience as both a player and coach at the Division I level. He will seamlessly jump into the role of assistant coach.”

Long helped lead the Camels to a .630 winning percentage (17-10) in 2020-21, marking the program’s highest since the 2009-10 team finished 19-11 (.633).  The Camels reeled off a school Division I era (since ‘77-78) record 9-game win streak to reach the Big South Championship game.

Campbell led the Big South Conference – and ranked 10th in the nation – in team field goal percentage in 2020-21.  CU’s 58.5 field goal percentage in the Big South semifinal win at Radford set a school mark for highest team FG% in Big South tournament play.  The Camels made a season-high 67.1 percent of their shots vs. Florida National (12/10), one day after making 60.5 percent vs. New Orleans.  CU hit 62 percent from the floor in an 84-83 loss Dec. 30 at eventual Big South champion Winthrop.

In addition, Campbell ranked fourth in the country in points after called timeouts and 25th nationally in 3-point accuracy (.375).

In his first year at Campbell, Long helped oversee the development of Cory Gensler, who was named the 2020 Big South men’s basketball scholar-athlete of the year, and a Camel team that ranked among league leaders in free throw percentage, turnover margin, assists, steals and assist-turnover ratio.

During his six seasons on the Elon staff, Long helped guide a Phoenix program that was ranked in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll and posted the most victories (70) in a four-year period in the team’s Division I era.  He also coached three-time Academic All-American Tyler Seibring, who also earned all-CAA honors on three occasions.

After joining the Phoenix staff in 2013, Long served as Director of Basketball Operations for one season before being promoted to assistant coach in 2014.  He was involved in all phases of the program, including recruiting, on-floor coaching, game strategy, summer camps and alumni relations.

A four-year letter winner at Elon from 2007-11, Long spent two seasons playing professional basketball in Poland and Romania.  After signing with the Miercurea Ciuc basketball club in Romania in 2011, he agreed to terms with Siarka Jerzioro in Poland in 2012.

Long, who earned a B.A in psychology from Elon in 2011, earned All-Southern Conference honors as a senior and finished his career second on the program’s all-time assists list.  He completed his career ranked among the school’s top five leaders in three-point field goals, assists and steals.
