No stranger to the Fighting Camel Basketball program, Cory Gensler is in his second year as a Graduate Assistant in 2021-22.
The 2020 Big South Conference Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Gensler was a three-time Big South Presidential Honor Roll and All-Academic Team selection.
Among Gensler’s responsibilities as Graduate Assistant are coordinating team travel, film exchange and coordination and assisting with the Campbell Summer Basketball Camps.
During his first year on the Camel staff, Gensler helped lead the Camels to a .630 winning percentage (17-10) in 2020-21, marking the program’s highest since the 2009-10 team finished 19-11 (.633).
The Camels reeled off a school Division I era (since ‘77-78) record 9-game win streak to reach the Big South Championship game.
The Camels led the Big South Conference – and ranked 10th in the nation – in team field goal percentage in 2020-21. CU’s 58.5 field goal percentage in the Big South semifinal win at Radford set a school mark for highest team FG% in Big South tournament play. The Camels made a season-high 67.1 percent of their shots vs. Florida National (12/10), one day after making 60.5 percent vs. New Orleans. CU hit 62 percent from the floor in an 84-83 loss Dec. 30 at eventual Big South champion Winthrop.
In addition, Campbell ranked fourth in the country in points after called timeouts and 25th nationally in 3-point accuracy (.375).
No one in Campbell Basketball history has played more games (133) than Gensler, who finished second on school career charts for minutes played (4124) and starts (126), sixth in 3-pointers attempted (518), 7th in 3s made (192) and 9th in steals (141). Gensler scored 1,106 points in his four-year career to rank 23rd on Campbell’s all-time list, 12th in the Division I era (since 1977-78).
A native of Cary, N.C., Gensler played for Campbell teams that won 72 games and made three postseason appearances - both the most in a four-year span in the program’s D1 tenure. He was a four-year starter and helped the team reach the Big South Championship title game as a freshman and secure the program’s first postseason bid (CollegeInsider.com Tournament) in 25 years.
During his sophomore year, Gensler hit the winning bucket over New Orleans that sent the Camels into the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational. As a junior, he was named to the Jamaica Classic all-tournament team after the Camels won the Rose Hall Division at Montego Bay. He went on to help lead the team to its first league regular season title in nine years and secure the Big South’s automatic berth in the NIT.
As a senior in 2020, Gensler averaged a career-high 10.7 points and ranked among the league leaders in scoring, rebounding, steals and blocks. In addition to his Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor, Gensler became just the 62nd player in Big South history to finish his career with at least 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
Gensler joined the Camels after leading Cary High School to the NC 4-A title game in 2016 and earning all-state recognition as well as a starting spot in the NC East-West All-Star Game.
A 2020 Campbell graduate as a business administration major, Gensler is pursuing his MBA in the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business.
