Emmanuel Matey

Emmanuel Matey was promoted to assistant coach before the 2045-25 season, his second with the Fighting Camels. Matey joined the program in June 2023 as Director of Basketball Operations, a role he held for one year before moving to assistant coach.

Matey helped Campbell to a 14-18 role in his first season in Buies Creek, also the program’s first in the CAA. Matey worked with Anthony Dell’Orso, a second-team all-CAA performer after averaging 19.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

Matey came to Buies Creek following two seasons in a graduate assistant role at VCU under head coach Mike Rhoades.

Matey helped the 2022-23 Rams post a 27-8 mark that culminated in an A10 Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. During that season, Matey worked with Ace Baldwin Jr., the A10 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, as well as two additional all-conference players. The 27 wins marked the most for VCU since the 2012-13 season.

Matey helped VCU go 22-10 during the 2021-22 season that ended in the second round of the NIT.

A Greenbelt, MD native, Matey has head coaching experience at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, his alma mater, where he returned to coach the JV squad for four seasons. He also served as an assistant coach to the varsity team that won the 2019 VHSAA state championship.

Matey began his playing career at Morgan State before transferring to Gannon University (Erie, Pa.) for his junior and senior seasons. He served as team captain as a senior and led his team to second place in the PSAC West Conference.

Matey earned his undergraduate degree from Gannon in 2017 with a B.S. in Business Administration with a sports marketing and management focus, and completed his masters of sport leadership at VCU in 2023.Â
