Champenois joined Campbell in March 2025 as an assistant coach.
"We are thrilled to welcome Lucas to our staff," Fonder stated. "I have been fortunate over my tenure to have incredible assistant coaches and Lucas is the next in line. He is a well rounded coach who will help us in all day to day aspects of the program. Lucas has been at many programs that have made the NCAA tournament and his experience will help us recruit to that vision. He knows what type of players we need to attract and that process is already underway. We embrace the challenge of getting Campbell soccer back to national prominence!"
Champenois joins Campbell after spending the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Florida International, primarily working with goalkeepers. He helped the Panthers to the American Athletic Conference double and third round of the NCAA Tournament in 2022 and an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament in 2023. During the 2024 season, he helped FIU to a runner-up finish in the AAC tournament.
"I'm incredibly grateful to Coach Fonder and the Campbell University administration for the opportunity to join this outstanding program," said Champenois. "Campbell soccer has a strong tradition of excellence, and I'm excited to contribute to the development of our student-athletes both on and off the field. I'm looking forward to building relationships with the players, staff, and university community as we work together to achieve our goals. It's an exciting time to be a part of this program, and I can't wait to get started. Roll Humps!"
Prior to FIU, Champenois spent three seasons as an assistant coach at NC State from 2019-21, again working with goalkeepers. He helped the Wolfpack earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament berth in 2019 after a fifth-place finish in a highly-competitive ACC. He aided in the development of CoSIDA All-American and All-Conference keeper Leon Krapf, who finished his career with the second-most shutouts in program history.
Before his time in Raleigh, Champenois served as an assistant coach at New Mexico from 2016-19. In his first season with the program, the Lobos won the Conference USA tournament and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.Â
Champenois has coached 20-plus players who went on to play professionally including MLS SuperDraft first round pick Simon Afrifa (Sporting KC) and third round pick Mikey Appiah (Inter Miami).
Before joining the coaching ranks, Champenois was a four-year goalkeeper standout from 2012-15 at Saint Mary's in California. He served as team captain and finished his career third all-time in program history in goals against average (1.23). During his senior season in 2015, Champenois led the West Coast Conference (WCC) in shutouts, goals allowed, and goals against average (0.95), while also earning Second Team All-WCC honors.Â
A native of Mountain View, California, Champenois holds a U.S. Soccer Federation 'D' License and is fluent in French and proficient in Spanish. He got his start in coaching in 2015, serving as an assistant coach with Diablo Football Club in Concord, California.Â
