William & Mary Rallies In Second Half to Defeat
Campbell 82-67
WILLIAMSBURG, VA.
Adam Hess scored 19 points, while Zeb Cope and Corey
Cofield added 16 each to lead William & Mary to an 82-67 win
over visiting Campbell on Tuesday night at William & Mary
Hall.
William & Mary
(4-5) shot 61 percent from the field (17-28) in the second half to
erase a two-point deficit and send Campbell (0-9) to its
ninth-straight loss to open the year.
Tarick Johnson came
off the Campbell bench to score 16 points, 14 in the second half,
while Anthony Atkinson added 13 and seven assists. Robby Dupre had
10 points and six rebounds for the Camels.
The Tribe opened the
second half on a 10-0 run, sparked by a pair of Taylor Mokris
three-pointers. William and Mary extended the flurry to 28-8 and
stretched the gap to 63-45 on Cope's 12-footer with 10:21
left.
Campbell shot just 34
percent (11-32) over the final 20 minutes and hit just 39 percent
of its attempts on the night. CU also made only 13-of-25 free
throws.
The Fighting Camels
have lost 22-straight road games, dating to an 84-79 victory at
Jacksonville State on Jan. 19, 2002.
Campbell's 37-35
advantage at the break marked the first time in nine games this
year that CU has led midway through the contest.
The Tribe led 26-16
when Cofield scored underneath with 9:22 remaining in the first
half. However, Russ Gibson scored six points in a 9-0 run to cut
the gap to 26-25 with 5:30 to go.
CU extended its spurt
to 21-9 and took its two-point edge at intermission after Lee
Marsh's triple from the left corner with 46 seconds to play.
Atkinson and Dupre each had nine first-half points, while Gibson
contributed eight.
Cope and Hess each
scored nine in the first period, but Hess (who entered the game
averaging 20.4 points per outing), went 1-for-7 from the field,
including 0-of-4 from 3-point range in the first 20
minutes.
Campbell's 0-9 start
marks its worst season-opening record since joining NCAA Division I
in 1977-78.
With 989 career
points, Johnson is only 11 shy of becoming the 23rd player in
Fighting Camel history to reach the 1,000-point barrier.
Campbell returns to
action on Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. tip-off against defending
Atlantic Sun champion Troy State at Carter Gym. [Box Score]
