Barrows and Blades Pace Camels
To 10-6 Win Over Gardner-Webb
BUIES CREEK, N.C.-
Campbell's Derek Barrows went 3-4 with a home run and three RBI and
Josh Blades pitched his fourth complete game of the season to lead
the Fighting Camels to a 10-6, Atlantic Sun victory over Gardner
Webb, Friday night in Buies Creek.
The Camels struck for a pair
of runs in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. After Sal
Deanda opened the frame with a double, Gardner-Webb starter Joey
Siak battled back to strike out Phillip Strickland and Tom Rispoli.
Siak then hit Jason Brown to put runners on first and second.
Barrows followed with bloop single to center field, scoring Deanda
and moving Brown to third base. Alston Hatch then drove in Brown
with a single to left field.
The
Bulldogs responded with two runs of their own in the top half of
the third inning. David Futrelle led the inning off with a home run
to left field. Ryan Quirello then lined a single to left field and
moved to second on Jay Bennett ground out to first base. Billy
McCarson singled to left to drive in Quirello and tie the game at
2-2. Gardner-Webb loaded the bases, but Blades struck out Clint
Abernathy to end the inning.
With one out in the fourth
inning, Chris Wiley walked and Jeff Blick singled to put runners on
first and second. Deanda then doubled to left field scoring both
runners, giving the Camels a 4-2 lead.
Barrows
added to the Camel lead in the fifth inning when he drove a Siak
offering over the left field fence for his sixth home run of the
year, extending the Camel lead to 5-2.
The CU lead jumped to 9-2
after scoring four runs in the sixth inning off GWU reliever Kevin
Wellmon. Phillip Strickland led off with a single and scored when
the next batter, Rispoli doubled to left field. Rispoli moved to
third on throw home trying to cut down Strickland and scored when
Brown lined a shot up the middle, through draw in infield. Alston
Hatch singled to left to move Brown to second with one out. Kyle
Ellenz then singled to right field, scoring Brown and moving Hatch
to third. The Camels final run came when Ellenz stole second, Hatch
advanced home on the throw by Bulldog catcher Jay Bennett.
In the
bottom of the seventh inning Barrows two out RBI single, plating
Rispoli and making the score 10-2.
After Blades retired the first
two batters in the eighth inning, Sam Bradford singled and was
brought home on Futrelle's second home run of the game. Quirello
then reach base on a single. Jay Bennett followed with a home run
to left field to cut the Camel lead to 10-6.
With
the win Blades record stands at 5-1, while Siak's falls to 7-5. The
Camels are now 20-24 and 12-16 in the Atlantic Sun. Gardner-Webb
drops to 29-20 and 14-14 in the A-Sun.
These
two teams will square off in doubleheader action tomorrow beginning
at 1:00 p.m. Tomorrow will also mark the final home games for nine
Camels seniors, who will be honored prior to game one. [Box
