Varsity Tops Veterans 7-2 In Campbell Alumni Game

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Seven different Campbell players scored to lift the 2005 varsity over a team of past standouts in the school's annual Alumni game.

Thirty former Campbell players and coaches returned for Saturday's game, including former All-Americans Juha Miettinen (1988) and David Doyle (1986) who figured in both alumni goals.

The varsity concluded its pre-season preparations by scoring five times in the first half. Matt Lightner and Julian Fulton notched goals just 1:22 apart in the opening 14 minutes. Chad Aboud's pass split the alumni back four on a quick counter attack in the 13th minute and Lightner ran in free to score the game's first goal.

Just over a minute later, left back David Comito curled a long pass into the area that Alex Bruemmer headed down and Fulton's first-time strike provided a 2-0 margin. Aboud finished a give-and-go combination with Josh Elliott in the 22nd minute to push the edge to 3-0.

Less than a minute later, Miettinen was fouled in the box, then sent a left-footed penalty kick inside the left post to trim the margin to 3-1.

The varsity answered with Bruemmer's strike in the 37th minute – marking the third-straight pre-season match the sophomore from Kalamazoo, Mich., scored for the Camels.

Elliott's finish off assists from Lightner and Sonny Guadarrama in the 40th minute provided a 5-1 half-time edge for the varsity.

Archer Abblitt started the second half for the varsity and scored just two minutes into the period off a Michael Hutchison assist.

After 79 minutes, Doyle sent a low cross to the far post that Miettinen controlled and shot into the roof of the net for the second alumni goal.

Campbell freshman keeper Aaron Johnson finished with eight saves, including spectacular stops against Doyle, Miettinen and Ward Flintom (‘87) in the final 15 minutes.

Abblitt then set up Jiri Beranek's strike in the 80th minute to conclude the scoring. The varsity finished with a 20-15 edge in shots.
