BUIES
CREEK,
N.C. - Josh Elliott scored one goal and assisted on another and
Campbell defeated Belmont 3-1 Thursday evening to secure a place in
next month's Atlantic Sun Conference men's soccer championship
tournament.
The Fighting Camels ran their home record at the Eakes Athletic
Complex to a perfect 7-0-0 by scoring twice in the first 20
minutes, then adding an insurance strike midway through the final
half. Campbell has outscored its visitors by a 17-5 margin at home,
where the Camels have only trailed for 18 minutes and seven seconds
all year. In fact, the Camels have not trailed on their home
surface since the season opener vs. UNC Wilmington on Aug.
26.
Ranked 10th in this week's South Region poll, Campbell (8-5-2,
3-1-2 A-Sun) extended its unbeaten to five games (4-0-1) and
secured one of six spots in the A-Sun Championship, which will be
held Nov. 2-4 at DeLand, Fla.
Elliott set up Willy Guadarrama's fifth goal of the year in the
15th minute. Guadarrama drove a left-footed shot from about 22
yards by Belmont keeper Kyle Roelke for his 32nd career goal in 52
matches.
Just over five minutes later, Elliott netted his third goal of the
season when Roelke saved Vince Petrasso's effort, but the junior
from Salisbury, Md., netted the rebound at 19:52 for a 2-0 Camel
margin.
Roelke dove to save a shot from Richard Jata in the box in the 23rd
minute to keep the margin at two.
Belmont (7-7-2, 3-2-1) then cut the
gap in half in the 41st minute on a re-start deep in Campbell's
end. Amr Ali served a free kick across the box and Bruin defender
Jay Ayres headed the ball in at the back post for his fifth strike
this year.
Campbell held a 2-1 edge at the break and extended its record to
4-0-1 this season when leading at half-time. CU is 7-0-1 when it
scores first.
Just after the half, Campbell keeper Aaron Johnson dove to his left
at full stretch and held on to Travis Hamilton's shot from the edge
of the box. Belmont's Eric Pittel struck a ball from the top of the
area in the 60th minute, but Johnson's save again preserved the
advantage.
After 63 minutes of play, Julian Fulton controlled a loose ball in
the area and fed Richard Jata for his seventh goal of the season to
push the Camel edge to 3-1.
Guadarrama nearly added a second strike when his effort from about
25 yards caromed off the underside of the crossbar in the 65th
minute.
Belmont's best chance to pull closer came after 85 minutes while
Ali's right-footed shot from the top left corner of the area curled
just wide right of the upper right corner.
The Bruins held a slight 14-13 edge in shots, but only six hit the
target, compared to seven for Campbell. CU took six corners to one
for the visitors.
Johnson made five saves in the Camel nets and lowered his
goals-against average to 1.21. Roelke finished with four stops in
just under 70 minutes for Belmont.
Campbell hosts Lipscomb - the A-Sun regular season finale for both
teams - in its annual Homecoming match on Saturday at 3:00
p.m.
