BUIES CREEK, N.C.
- The College of Charleston spoiled Campbell University's bid for
an undefeated and untied men's soccer home record Wednesday night
with a 3-1 victory at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
Charleston (10-8-1) scored three times on just six shots to hand
Campbell (9-6-2) its first loss in seven outings overall and its
initial setback at home this season. Campbell finished its home
schedule with an 8-1-0 mark in its attempt to equal the perfect 9-0
home field records set by the 1970 and 1993 squads.
Casey Gold, Stephen Nagy and Doug Edwards scored for the Cougars,
who saw an early lead slip away in the 38th minute, only to jump
ahead again just 19 seconds later.
Campbell,
which was 5-0-1 in its previous six outings, held a 15-6 edge in
shots, but only a 7-5 advantage in attempts on target.
The Cougars went in front on a counter attack in the 13th minute
when Gold's left-footed shot outside the box beat Camel keeper
Aaron Johnson inside the left post. The deficit was Campbell's
first at home since the season opener on Aug. 26 vs. UNC
Wilmington.
Campbell equalized at the 37:52 mark
when freshman Vince Petrasso controlled the ball at the top of the
area and his right-footed shot found the net.
However, just 19 seconds later, CofC was in front again as Grant
Guthrie fed Nagy for his first goal of the season on an attempt
from the right wing. Nagy's score marked the first time that the
Camels had surrendered more than one goal on their home field this
year.
CofC, which entered the game ranked 20th nationally in goals scored
per game (2.06) added a third strike in the 72nd minute through
Edwards, whose long-distance right footed shot sailed into the
upper left corner of Johnson's net.
The Camels were denied twice by the woodwork in the 77th minute.
Petrasso's shot from the top of the area hit the crossbar, then
Richard Jata's effort from about 10 yards on the rebound caromed
off the left post.
The match marked the final home appearance for five Campbell
graduating seniors - Julian Fulton, Willy Guadarrama, Scott
Phillips, Chris Price and Willy Guadarrama.
Campbell returns to action Saturday at Liberty (7:00) before taking
on Mercer next Thursday in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship
tournament at DeLand, Fla.
