CREEK,
N.C. - Willy Guadarrama scored twice in an 8:30 span during the
second half and Campbell defeated North Florida 2-0 Saturday in an
Atlantic Sun Conference match at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
The Fighting Camels (6-5-1, 2-1-1) won their second-straight outing
and improved to 5-0-0 at home this year. CU has not trailed in its
last four home outings and has outscored its foes by a 13-4 margin
over its five games at Eakes.
North Florida (2-8-1, 0-3-0) saw its
winless streak extended to eight games (0-7-1), including
four-consecutive losses. UNF is also 0-4-0 this year on opponents'
home turf.
Keeper Aaron Johnson had four saves in the Camel nets and recorded
his second shutout of the year, while lowering his goals-against
average to 1.23.
A junior pre-season All-America choice from Cedar Park, Texas,
Guadarrama recorded his first multi-goal outing of the 2006 season
and in the process moved into 14th place on Campbell's all-time
scoring list. In 49 career outings, Guadarrama has 71 points on 31
goals and nine assists.
Richard Jata set up Guadarrama's second goal and ran his personal
string to five-consecutive home games with at least one goal or
assist. The sophomore from Port Richey, Fla., ranks second in the
A-Sun with 16 points on six goals and four assists in 12
games.
Campbell nearly took the lead in the first half when Josh Elliott
hit the cross bar in the 21st minute and Vince Petrasso's effort
also caromed off the bar in the 40th. The tandem, however, linked
passes to set up Guadarrama in the 61st minute to push the Camels
in front.
Petrasso fed Elliott down the right flank and the junior crossed
into the box, where Guadarrama headed home his third goal of the
year at 60:30.
Less than a minute later, however, Johnson had to dive left to
steer a left-footed shot from UNF's Matt Williams just past the
right post and preserve the one goal edge. After Johnson saved Mats
Elsater's shot at 68:01, the Ospreys were unable to get off an
attempt over the last 21:59.
On 69 minutes, Jata pushed the ball forward to Guadarrama and his
30-yard effort beat UNF keeper Freddy Neely for a two-goal Campbell
cushion. Guadarrama ran his season tally to 10 points on four goals
and two assists.
Elliott was denied in the 72nd minute when his point-blank shot
beat Neely, but UNF back Matthew Hollyoak cleared the ball off the
line.
Campbell finished with a 14-7 edge in shots, including an 8-3
advantage in the second period. The Fighting Camels return to
action Tuesday at home in a 7:00 p.m. kick-off against third-ranked
North Carolina.
