DAVIDSON,
N.C. - Stephen Oyuga scored the game's lone goal with six seconds
left in the first half and Campbell defeated Davidson 1-0 Saturday
night for the Camels' first road win of the year.
The Fighting Camels (4-4) knocked off the Wildcats (4-6), who
entered the match ranked eighth in the South Region, for the
second-straight year with a one-goal decision. The strike was set
up with Julian Fulton played a corner kick into the box that
Davidson was unable to clear. Freshman Patrick Danford headed the
ball to Oyuga, who ripped a shot into the net for his first career
goal.
Camel sophomore keeper Aaron Johnson recorded three saves - all in
the first 11 minutes - to earn his first shutout of the year.
Despite the fact that Davidson out-shot the Camels 16-13, only
three Wildcat attempts were on target - none in the last 79 minutes
of the match.
Davidson had a pair of great chances to equalize early into the
final stanza. The first came at the 55:40 mark when Whitey Bolan
played a one touch to Mac Wilkie, who ripped a blast from the top
of the 18 that sailed just over the frame. Just minutes later,
Wildcat defender Robby Hoak came forward to attempt a free kick
from just over 30 yards out, but his opportunity also missed
high.
The Camels missed three clear opportunities to double the advantage
in the 72nd minute when Richard Jata's penalty kick was saved by
Robby Goldsberry. Josh Elliott then hit the crossbar on the
rebound, and Jata hit the post on the second carom.
Campbell, which had dropped its first four games away from the
Eakes Athletic Complex, carries a two-match win streak into its
Atlantic Sun Conference season on Thursday at Stetson, a rematch of
last year's league final won 2-1 by the Hatters.
