LEWISBURG, PA. - Alex Russo set up both
goals and host Bucknell defeated Campbell 2-1 Friday night on the
first day of the Bucknell Invitational at Varsity Soccer
Field.
The Bison (3-1-1) won their third-straight match by scoring in the
sixth and 83rd minutes to deal Campbell (2-2-0) - which entered the
game ranked ninth in the South Region - its second-consecutive
loss.
After lightning delayed the tournament for approximately an hour,
Russo's cross was knocked in by Nathan LaGrave at 5:39 - the third
goal of the season for the freshman -- to put the hosts ahead
early.
In the 83rd minute, Russo again set up Justin Wolf on a free kick
to double the Bison advantage.
Pre-season All-America forward Willy Guadarrama scored his second
goal of the year on the 87:00 mark to cut the margin in half when
he netted a rebound from Alex Bruemmer.
The strike lifted Guadarrama into a tie for 17th place on
Campbell's all-time scoring list with 65 points. A junior from
Cedar Park, Texas, Guadarrama has 29 goals and seven assists. He
matched the total of Mathew Hooker, who notched 65 points on 15
strikes and 35 assists from 1993-97.
Bucknell held a 13-11 edge in shots. Bison keeper Joey Kuterbach
had four saves, while Aaron Johnson made seven stops for the
Camels.
Campbell returns to action on Saturday
in a 5:30 p.m. kickoff against Duquesne. Bucknell hosts Rider at
8:00 p.m.
