CREEK, N.C. - Campbell defeated North Florida 3-1 Thursday night
at the Eakes Athletic Complex and clinched the top seed in next
month's Atlantic Sun Conference men's soccer championship.
Pat
Danford, Kevin Orozco and Bryan Dornseif scored for the Camels
(7-8-1, 6-1-1), who earned a first-round bye and will host the
league semifinals (Nov. 12) and final (Nov. 14) for the
second-straight year.
If the Camels defeat visiting Jacksonville Saturday night (7:00),
Campbell would win its second-straight out-right A-Sun regular
season title and third in the last five years.
"It was a hard-fought game, and while I'm pleased with the result,
we will need to be sharper moving forward," said Campbell head
coach Doug Hess. "Despite the fact that we conceded, the guys did
well to play from that point."
On Thursday, the Camels broke in front just 1:04 into the game when
Austin Skakle played a pass down the right flank. Keegan Terry
sent a low cross into the box and Danford's volley hit the left
side of the net for his third goal of the year.
Campbell nearly doubled the lead in the 24th minute. UNF defender
Kevin Ramirez was sent off for a foul on Vince Petrasso in the
area. However, Ospreys keeper Jullian Beau saved the penalty kick
from Mitchell Cardenas to keep UNF within one goal.
A half-hour into the game, the Camels nearly scored again. Khalil
Johnson's cross fell to Jackson Ferrell at the six-yard box, but
his shot from a sharp angle was high and wide of the right
post.
One minute later, Johnson got behind the UNF back four, but he shot
into Beau on the breakaway opportunity.
North Florida (3-11-1, 3-4-1) drew level in the 57th minute when
Frank Dinzey's cross found Calvin Lowe unmarked at the far post for
his third goal of the year.
The Ospreys nearly went in front just two minutes later through
Adam O'Neill, whose right-footed shot was headed for the top
corner, but Camel keeper Ted Awana stretched to make his only save
of the night.
Sophomore defender Kevin Orozco put the Camels in front for good at
the 61:58 mark. Terry flicked on Petrasso's corner kick to the far
post, where Orozco met the ball with a swinging volley. The assist
was Petrasso's league-leading ninth of the year.
Dornseif hit the crossbar in the 66th minute and Hector Moreira's
follow slid just wide.
However, Campbell did add an insurance goal in the 70th minute when
Danford cut back in the box and crossed the ball to Jason Keever,
who touched it on to Dornseif. A UNF defender blocked Dornseif's
initial effort, but the junior tucked home the rebound for his
second goal of the year.
The
Camels improved to 17-1-2 in their last 20 A-Sun regular season
matches, 31-5-5 in the regular year against conference foes since
the start of the 2005 campaign.
