BUIES CREEK, N.C. The Campbell University baseball team
scored early and often as the Camels defeated the Spartans of UNC
Greensboro. With the win
Greg Goff's team improves to 5-0 on the season.
Alex Aycoth (Sanford, Fla.) led the Camel attack, going 4-of-5 from
the dish, while knocking in a run and scoring two runs of his
own. Aycoth's four hits are
a career best, while the two runs scored ties his career high.
The Camels trailed 2-0 after the top half of the first, but would
gain the lead in the bottom half of the inning, a lead they would
never surrender.
Several other Camels set career highs in the contest. Kevin Nelson (Sunrise, Fla.) and Josh
Holskey (Roanoke, Va.) had three hits for the first time in their
careers. Both Nelson and
Holskey finished the day with two RBI.
Chris Bangi and Graham Fronk also set career marks. Bangi, a junior from Jacksonville,
Fla. finished the day with three RBI, while Fronk, a sophomore from
Charlotte, N.C. finished the day with two RBI.
Josh Fish (Bellingham, Wash.) got the call on the mound for the
Camels versus the Spartans.
Fish pitched six strong innings, allowing six hits while three
Spartan runners scored. The
win moves Fish's season record to 1-0.
Hunter Ford, Jeff Hoffman, and Jonathon Lopez all pitched one
complete inning to close out the game for the Camels. The trio combined allowed just two
hits.
UNCG (0-4) was led at the plate by Ray Quinones and Trevor
Edwards. Quinones finished
the day 2-of-4 with one RBI, while Edwards finished 3-of-4. Rob Gilliam would be credited
with the loss after pitching four innings, in which he gave up 10
hits and six earned runs.
The loss drops Gilliam's season record to 0-2.
The
Camels hit the road for their next eight contests, which includes
match-ups with conference foes Kennesaw State and Florida Gulf
Coast. Florida A&M, a
member of the MEAC conference, is also on the slate for Campbell's
road trip. Campbell will
return home to Taylor Field on Tuesday, March 10th, when
they host Longwood.
