CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Campbell dropped its midweek matchup against No. 6 North Carolina in extra innings on Tuesday night at Boshamer Stadium.
Campbell falls to 18-10 on the season while North Carolina improves to 25-4-1.
The 14-inning contest was the longest game since the Camels competed in a 15-inning game on May 14, 1999 against Samford.
North Carolina (25-4-1) struck first in the opening frame on a solo home run to take an early 1-0 lead.
Campbell (18-10) quickly responded in second with three runs on three hits to take a 3-1 lead.
Logan Chapman led off the inning reaching on a Tar Heel error and
Jett Music recorded a base hit before
Andrew Schuldt ripped a two-RBI double to give the Camels the lead.
Trent Rumley then drew a bases loaded walk to extend the lead.
The Tar Heels cut into the lead in the second with its second solo shot of the game making it 3-2.
The Camels extended its lead back out to two in the fourth on a
Carlos Lugo RBI double to right field scoring
Joe Simpson. Simpson drew a six-pitch walk before advancing to second on a failed pick off attempt.
North Carolina worked the bases loaded on a pair of base hits and walk but
Owen Simmons picked up a big strikeout to end the jam in the fifth frame.
The Tar Heels got back within one in the seventh on an RBI groundout and would eventually tie things up in the eighth on an RBI double to make it 4-4 heading into the ninth.
After five scoreless innings, the Tar Heels broke through with the bases loaded to secure the walk-off win, 5-4.
Mason Smith earned the start going 4.1 innings allowing two runs on four hit and picked up five strikeouts.
Owen Simmons,
Beau Brailey, and
Jett Music combined to throw 4.2 innings allowing two runs on three hits combined.
Carlos Lugo (0-1) made his first appearance on the mound this season suffering the loss after allowing the lead off walk in the 14th. Lugo went 2.0 innings of relief and picked up three strikeouts.
The pitching staff combined for 18 strikeouts for a new season-high.
Rumley led the offense going 3-for-6 with an RBI and walk while Lugo added his 11th multi-hit performance of the season going 2-for-7.
