Fla. The Campbell
University baseball team fell to the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast
by a score of 5-2. The loss drops Campbell's record to 8-4 overall
with a 1-4 mark in league play. FGCU improves to 8-5 on the season
and sits 3-0 in A-Sun play.
Stephen
Parsons led the Camels at the plate. The senior from Chesapeake,
Va. finished the day batting 2-of-4, while scoring a run for the
Camels. Campbell also received positive production at the plate
from senior Ryan Hamme (Wilmington, N.C.) and Ellis Lowe (San
Diego, Calif.). The pair
finished 5-of-10 and each player drove in a run.
Campbell fell
behind 3-1 after two innings and would trail 4-1 after five
complete innings. FGCU
would push another run across in the bottom of the eighth to extend
the lead to 5-1.
Campbell would
start a brief rally in the top of the ninth inning. After Ellis Lowe's single to right,
Ryan Hamme would double to left center field. Hamme's double allowed Lowe to
score. That would prove to
be all the damage the Camels could do. Hamme would be left stranded at second
base, after Zach Johnson and Matt Keen both struck out.
Dan Gardo (West
Chester, Pa.) got the start on the hill for Campbell. The sophomore pitched four innings,
giving up five hits, as four eagles came around to score. Jeff Rydman and Carlton Floyd
would close out the game for the Camels. The pair pitched the final four
innings, giving up 5 hits while just one FGCU runner came in to
score.
Gardo was credited
with the loss, and now sits 0-1 on the season. FGCU pitcher Richie Erath was credited
with the win after pitching six innings, scattering eight hits over
his outing and allowing just one run. Erath now has a season record of
1-1.
FGCU was paced at
the plate by Zach Maxfield.
The sophomore designated hitter went 3-for-4, while scoring one of
the Eagles five runs.
Campbell will
return to the diamond on Tuesday when the host Longwood in
doubleheader action at Taylor Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
